New Portraiture Lens

Hey guys,

Just wondering on an opinion....I'm looking at doing a few portraits to get my portfolio up, and I was deciding on a lens. I don't have a lot of money, so I can only buy one lens. I'm trying to decide between a 35mm wide angle, a 50mm standard lens and an 85mm telephoto. I need this lens for all round portraiture, and was just after opinions of some people who have done this before.

My opinion of these lens are

35mm f2 = $400++ (1.6x = 56mm , sharp; good built for a non-USM lens; good for indoor portrait; can take as close as 0.25 cm)

50mm f1.8 = $140++ (1.6x = 80mm , sharp; plastic built & noisy ; good for indoor portrait; can take as close as 0.45 cm)

50mm f1.4 USM = $650++ (1.6x = 80mm, sharp; good built & quiet ; good for indoor portrait; can take as close as 0.45 cm)

85mm f1.8 USM = $640++ (1.6x = 136mm , sharp; good built & quiet ; good for indoor/outdoor portrait; can take as close as 0.8 cm)

I own 35mm f2 & 85mm f1.8 USM and I like them very much.

the rest is depend on you ...

Well, for all round, maybe the 50mm will suffice?

I think U mean 0.45m ( 45cm ) ?

megaweb is correct, I have a 35mm f/2... excellent lens...

God this is a hard choice. I'm still not sure. There's a 100 dollar price difference on both lenses, so I don't want to waste money getting a lens that I wont use. I'm swaying more to the USM 50mm, but I'm still not totally convinced. The 35mm would be good, but whats the difference between a USM and a non-USM lens? What would be the pro's and cons of each size?
