I own a canon eos 400D with a 18-55mm kit lens (purchased Nov 07).
Was wondering what would be good to get for my 2nd lens, but have quite a tight budget <$500-600.

Considering:
#1 Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8
#2 Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6
#3 Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 or 1.8

Usually take photos on holiday (scenery, occasional shots with people, food) and occasionally take portraits, wedding photos.

Any suggestions or other lenses to recommend?

Thanks :)

Use your existing lens for your trael and landscapes. Invest in a 50mm lens for portraits and weddings.

i second the above, can also consider a 35mm portrait.

The 50mm f/1.8 is about $130-$150 I think, plus the 35mm f/2 is about $400+

But not sure, if you will like to have 2 primes + 1 kit lens. Primes are fixed focal so not as convenient, but large aperture.

Try getting the 50mm f/1.8 first and see how you go. It was also 1 of the first few lenses I bought as it was very cheap to experiment with.

You can decide on the 35mm later.

Would it make sense to replace kit lens with an alternative (like the tamron or 28-135) ?
Not sure if I should invest in 2 primes and I may not use them very often..

Do you intend for the second lens to replace or complement your kit lens?

Do you intend for the second lens to replace or complement your kit lens?

this is a good question

do you want a REPLACEMENT, or an addition?

in any case, if you don't know, then the question is, do you want to take other perspectives, or is the kit lens limiting you in any way?

55-250 IS.

good for just about any occassion. if you need more range look up teleconverter.

wait till you get to 'Need to purchase 8th lens!'................ :bsmilie:

all noise aside, try to avoid too much overlapping of focal lengths
