Hi, it's my first time doing a studio shoot and it will be of nude male models, i was like wondering if any one can give tips on how to make it look more artistic rather than pornagraphy, i mean i can't shoot all the pics of the models backs rite? how do i shoot the front with out makin it look like some gay porn magazine? any one can help pls? this by the way is fer my skool's project...

oh yes one more thing. where can have the artistic nude photos developed? most places i believe will not develope them rite?

goggle the web. there are a number of US-based photogs who specialised in nudes. have a look at how they posed the models for some clues.

developing? i heard someone mentioned to me b4 u can try stanley's.

goggle the web? i take it u mean to search the web huh?.. i did.. but i mostly got porn... very distasteful hahahah

There's a good book - Lighting the Nude: Top photography professionals share their secrets by RotoVision. It has a small section on male nudes. According to my list I got from PSS - this same book will be on sale this Sunday, 15/8, at PSS. See here -

http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=87548

Also, I've just printed 20+ Super8R nude shots at Konota. (Was recommended to me for nude shots). Will be printing more soon.

BTW - what school project is that? I've done female nude shots but never male models.

It is difficult to be dogmatic on what constitute "porn". Values differ. But I think when you see "real" porn you can recognise one.

The male sexual organs I think is not very "photogenic". And even a photographer like Andreas Bitesnich (I hope I got the spelling right) tries to hide it!

But there are a lot of the male body to photograph without showing the sexual organs, just like photographing the female nude. For example, a "frontal" shot can be done with the body facing sideway with the near leg (to the camera) strategically placed to hide teh genitals, then twist the body the other side to create a sense of motion. you dont have to photograph the model "spread eagle" or "four legs pointing to heaven"!

About printing, are you shooting in color or traditional black & white. Somehow "artistic" nudes are more "artistic" when done in black & white, perhaps black & white are not natural anyway. You have actually reduced everything to shapes and forms.

yeah, search the web.. :D

instead of typing 'male nudes', search for photography>photographers. then u'll get the names of photogs who specialise in shooting nude forms. ;)

Here is one:

www.bitesnich.at.

Andreas bitesnich is one very well known photographer of nudes, both male and females. You might be able to find some of his work in Kinokuniya (not nudes - I think it was on "Vietnam" or "angkor" - something on travel photography)

Fwah... thankls to all those with the info... i've gonw tru most of them.. lots of good help there.. thanks..

to bravocube. yep i'm in raffles laselle, doing a design course.. but i've got photography as one module.. then i chose on the human body as my topic.. female nude i also got shoot. but some how women easier to shoot la.. male model really need to get like those really cut one... i'm thinking that for male models got less margin or error, cos like ppl tend to be more critical for male nudes than female nudes.. hehe dunno y la.. thanks guys for all the help
;) ;)

hi you may want to beware of copying other photographers' ideas of what constitutes a good male nude shot

there's nothing ugly or beautiful about the genitals, it is exactly what it is, and it's considered ugly now because of social perceptions, not because it created ugly, the opposite is true with the female form, it's considered beautiful because of many years of people glorifying the female form, and it becomes a common social perception that the female form is beautiful

a lot of seemingly pornography looking shots aren't considered pornography because of the intention of the photographer and the photos, so don't limit yourself and don't end up following a cliched path, do something interesting with your project yeah?

hehe dun worry.. i surely will... and well i dun believe in copying la... mebbe get inspiration on wat to do... kinda lost when it comes to male nudes la... heheh

er by the way ah... to develope the nude shots.. go to stanley lim color center ah?

Yes .... that status is call "David" supposingly to be having the most correct proportion on his male body ......

No female photographers, I guess, but I think you can take a picture of Venus, mentioned as the female figure with the ultimate "Golden Ratio" .......

Don't really know the address of Konota, but it's right across the Bata shoe store down at Peninsular (same building as Cathay Photo).

Stanley's lab is at 122 Middle Rd, #02-03, Midlink Plaza. Diagonally across from the NAFA campus there.
