Need advise on Wide-angle lens!

Need a wide-angle len that do not give too much of a distortion and yet able to capture landscape like Niagara Falls or Grand Canyon, etc.

Ideally, it can be used on SLR and DSLR.
If a len is particularly use for DSLR, how do I know if it can be used on SLR?
and how much vignetting the picture will turn out to be? Any formula?

what system? if nikon might wan to look at the nikkor 12-24 f4. :thumbsup:

yup, i think the nikon one is a good choice. else the tokina 12-24 also not bad. cheap also.

i think for nikon, if its not DX than can use on SLR already.

For Canon, get the EF-S 10-22mm f/4.5-5.6 USM for 1.6X cropped sensors and EF 17-40mm f/4L USM for full frame ones. If got enough to spare, get the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM.

wide angle without too much distortion... hmm... tough...
do you really need that piece of specialised wide angle lens?
or can you do with a 16~18mm lens which you can piece panoramic shots with some photo stitch software?

been reading quite abit on ultra wide lens too...since i am also interested in getting one,

guess if the bank acct allows....the canon 10-22mm should be lens to get..
but personally....saw some great shots by sigma 10-22mm....

well..the $200 difference...should see most ppl going for canon instead...

well, if u are using canon system.... 10-22mm is the glass to get. no questions asked!

sigma is 10-20. and i have that one. and it is quite fun to use.

I have the Canon 10-22mm, it's the best built comparing to my 2 other sigma 18-50 f2.8 & 70-300 lenses.

Distortions are present as long as you don't point it horizontally straight, but this is true for the wide angles out now. The canon's distortions are easily correctable in PS

You want a WA for both SLR and DSLR? Then the only one I know which fits the bill is the Sigma 12-24mm. All other WA lenses would not be able to cover the entire frame in a film camera throughout the entire zoom range.

No formula to find out how big is the coverage on a film camera; just mount the lens on your film camera and see for yourself through the viewfinder. And don't worry, it wouldn't spoil the lens or camera (unless it's incompatible... like Canon EF-S series)

I personally use a Tokina 12-24/f4... its great on a DSLR... on a SLR, the zoom range is about 17-24mm for full frame pics, which is similiar to that of a Nikon 12-24/f4.
