i am using a canon 350d. any recommendation for a good budget zoom lens? cant affort the L lens. want to pair with the kit len 18-55mm. will be getting a 50mm 1.8 also.

first i cant decide between the 3:
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 lll
Canon EF 55-200mm F4.5-5.6 II USM
Canon EF 80-200mm 4.5-5.6 II

all got pros and cons.

also thinking about:
Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Asp
Tokina 24-200 f3.5/5.6 zoom ATX-242

but i was strongly encourage to go for canon lenses.

any suggestion or advice will be helpful.

Get those with f2.8.

A really helpful comment.

Between all your choices, I'd go for the 55-250 IS. Of all of them, it's definitely got the best resolving power, it's lightweight, and it has IS to boot.

bro(s), i know get better fstop, but i dont have the budget... are there alternatives?

Did you read my post carefully? I recommended the 55-250mm IS. :dunno:

Get prime lens instead of zoom lens.

zoom + good f-stop = very expensive.
fixed + good f-stop = moderately expensive
zoom + soso f-stop = moderately expensive
fixed + soso f-stop = cheap cheap lah.:bsmilie:

opps, i missed that part. stopped at "a really helpful comment" :bsmilie:

One of your options is a 55-200. Don't get that.
Like what others recommend, get the 55-250 IS instead.

yup, there have already been many entries about the kit 18-55, 50 f1.8 and 55-250 being one the most decent lense coverage for the budget ....

believe it or not the 55-250mm IS was on my camera most of the time when i was using Canon system. Only used the 18-55mm IS for the occasional group shots and landscape.

The IS is very very useful.

hey all, thanks bros for all the advice...

i was initially looking at:

  1. Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Asp
  2. Tokina 24-200 f3.5/5.6 zoom ATX-242
  3. Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 lll
  4. Canon EF 55-200mm F4.5-5.6 II USM

in order of perference. until you mention about 55-250 IS.

i was looking at Tamron AF 18-200mm because of the range coverage. 1 lens and i dont have to change when i go outdoor.

Tokina 24-200 f3.5/5.6 was because the fstop is 3.5 like the tamron and the price is half of tamron.

and Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 lll because i was strongly encourage by my friends to get canon for their after sales service. and the range to 300mm for half the price of tamron also. (i am getting 2nd hand that is why.)

seems like IS is highly recommended..

18-200 is a nice range , you'll hardly need to change lenses.
but f6.3 at the end can be quite irritating sometimes and the iq isn't as good as lenses with a shorter zoom range. i have the 18-200 but i only use it in very good light or when im lazy to change lenses. i've heard that the canon 75-300 is very bad in image quality.

IS is almost always a necessity for slow telephoto/zoom lenses.
Unless you have a fast lens, like f/2.8.

Hi, Im looking for a suitable lens for my 'future' Canon 450D too....

18-200mm seemed to be the most suitable for general travel usage. Can anyone tell me roughly what's the price range in the market? I know the original Canon one is v. exp.. >$500... but not sure sure abt the rest of the brands.
