What is the difference between EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM lens and EF-S 18 - 55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens?Which is a better lenses for group photo and a user friendly lens?:)

Depends on what you are shooting.

Both 17-85 & 18-55 are kit lenses, meaning "entry" level.

You should do quite a bit of reading up first, this is always helpful and other CS'ers would not feel that you are being spoon-fed.

17-85 has longer reach, 30mm more than 55mm. Therefore, you can bring your subject closer to you.

Having said that, even if you are using the 18-55. Say you are 30mm short, just take a few steps and walk towards your subject.

Group photos and general portraits can range from 35mm-85mm. As both the kit lenses are EF-S, the camera is cropped at 1.6x.

This means that your 55mm is actually 88mm (by a multiplier of 1.6x).

Confused yet??

BTW, welcome to CS.

hahax! Thanks for the help of both of you..
