Hi, my teenage daughter is thinking of applying for the Diploma in Human Resource Management with Psychology at Republic Polytechnic (we stay in Woodlands):

Is there a good future in HR profession for girls? anyone knows what is the cut-off point for diploma course in Poly?

Thanks in advance

Actually many people do stuff outside of their occupational training. Engineers become bankers. It is impossible to predict what the future brings. There may be some star profession in 20 years' time that is not in vogue now. Some occupations are just stepping stones. For example, air stewardesses hope to catch the eye of some tycoon or Sultan.

Hi.. first of all.. congrats..
secondly.. have you read all other KPT thread before asking ? :bsmilie:

lol. everyone from my poly is doing something that is not related to their diploma.

LoL.i believe i read something similar to this thread some time back.

do what you love, not what everyone else is trying to do.

in the end, you either hate your job, or you hate the one who encouraged you to go for it in the first place.

oh yes. one more thing: wait for your daughter to get the results first. the guide for the year will show you the cut off points. they change every year. so asking us is useless.

All I can say is in Singapore studying human resource is much better than studying mineral resources unless we start to buy up the mining companies in the world or we've found gold, silver, iron ore, coal, copper or tin etc. in Santosa Island. :)

IIRC, we are already one of the world's top precious metal and mineral trading nation.

The Singapore Precious Metals Exchange (SGPMX) was just launched a couple of days ago.

TS, I always feel HR is a recession proof occupation given that every company requires a HR dept. Furthermore, due to diversity of nationalities nowadays, there is a need for coy to employ locals for confidentiality reasons. I have also heard of locals in overseas HR positions so opportunities is not limited to within Singapore only. However, as with all other diploma courses, it can only probably land one in a junior position.

HR is just any other office administration occupation, don't have to get a specialist certification for it.

One company with a a thousand strength just requires how many HR executives and manager?

For ladies, it is quite a good option. At least I don't see HR department working late or have deadlines to meet. Accounting is a no no. Business admin = sale, if your girl are pretty type and willing to social type.

While it's prudent to look at job prospects, it'll be pointless if one ends up dropping out or doing poorly due to lack of interest. Best to pursue studies in a subject one is interested/passionate about. But if it isn't too specialised, there's still the chance to pursue something different at the degree level.

'Good future' means different things to different people. Stability or big $$$? Is she the ambitious sort who wants to climb the corporate ladder? With a Dip, probably the furthest one can 'climb' is senior exec or assistant manager after a good number of years. You could check out current job ads for a feel of job prospects, but that tells you little about what things will be like in 3 years.

Depend on company. A friend used to work in HR, always knockoff when the sky already dark. Lots of events n admin stuffs, feedback etc to handle.
During poly attachment, a classmate attached to HR dept, almost everyday working OT. (we in engineering course, but he been attached to HR)
Then has another friend currently in HR, get to knockoff on time.
So it depend and luck.

wow. sexist are we?

I work ALOT with our company's HR department. They manage several thousand people in Singapore and around Asia.

Yes hours can be long so you need to have a genuine desire to care for and love interacting with people.

Anyway, what's the problem with overtime for young people ? Cant put in the sacrifices, blood and sweat? Join the Teddy Bear crowd... they are not meant for bigger things in life.

I have come to realize and appreciate that HR work is not only about hirings and processing resignations. Its about:

1. Understanding people
2. Encouraging Work+Life Balance through various policies
3. Ensuring healthcare and well-being (both physical and mental) of employees
4. Keeping up morales
5. Counselling those that are unsure about their career paths
6. Provide training beyond professional skills including life skills and people skills
7. Studying, analyzing and evaluating staff performances
8. Payroll and CPF
9. Hirings and outprocessing departing staff

So YES by all means go for it. She has to have a love for people to do well in HR

Heart pain when the company retrench/down size/restructure etc.

I was once with a company with 3000 employees.(1500 subcontract workers, 800 foreign talents and the rest local or PR)

The company went into receivership.

1. 1500 subcontract workers had to go
2. Come 2nd phase, 800 foreign talents were sent home.
3. 3rd batch.. those with poor attitude/ poor attendant etc about 400 were compensated and left
4. The last batch - no compensation only one month notice

exactly !! it is easy to hire hands and legs to do simple stuff but not easy to hire proficient HR staff who know beyond payroll, bonus and CPF calculations.

Other professions can buy by the lorry-load including my line of work.

So who you think have more survival possibility?

HR and Operations are often unappreciated but vital organs in an organization

i remember someone told me:

"HR is just about hiring and firing people"

lots of people don't understand the job scope of people in HR.

but then again, there are HR departments that really are terrible in what they do (i know of one that is understaffed and whose staff are mainly agency contracts, and most of them who go on a lot long breaks)

and i know of a firm who recently won a work-life balance award... but the staff in that company are going "are you kidding me?"

One of the senior HR auntie in my ex-coy always put Mr. or Ms. or Mrs. for job title.

When we automate the domain account creation, the info in the e-mail address book is hilarious.

Not to mention she mixed up the first name and last name.

I am not a fan of hr related profession. Do you think hr will fight for your rights? What if you got conflicts with your manager where your manager is at fault. Do you think your hr will supoort you? What if you are in hr position where your boss task you to fire or terminate senior or good hard working employees due to organisational restructuring?
What is hr ethical conduct? I would imagine people whom work in hr role has personality problems............

I guess there are many jobs there with goods prospect...example photographer...highly respected.
