NDP 2006 a tribute to National Stadium

THE National Day Parade to mark Singapore's 41st year of independence returns to the National Stadium for the last time on August 9, before it makes way for the sports hub.

All Singaporeans are invited to contribute pictures, videos and stories which bring back fond memories of the place and the best will be showcased on a special website.

'The National Stadium is best remembered for being the staging ground for many memorable NDPs as well as other large scale and sports events,' said Brigadier-General Goh Kee Nguan, Chairman of the Executive Committee of NDP 2006.

'We hope to give this national icon of ours a fitting farewell with NDP 2006,' he said.

NDP celebrations will also be centralised at Kallang, and unlike last year, will not move to the heartlands.

The traditional favourite of the fireworks display will be held at Marina Bay. There will four displays - on August 5, 8, 11 and 12.

The theme for NDP 2006 is 'Our Global City, Our Home'.

'We celebrate Singapore's growth as a vital regional and global hub in areas such as commerce, transportation and financial services.

'As much as we are plugged into the global community, we want to remind ourselves that Singapore is still home,' said BG Goh.

Those who want to attend the parade can apply for tickets between May 25 and June 4.

They can apply online at the NDP website, by SMS or telephone. For the preview show, they can call 1900-112-1391 and for the August 9 show, 1900-112-1392. Each call or SMS costs 20 cents.

Applications can also be made at SAM machines and AXS stations.

Tickets will be allocated by electronic balloting. Successful applicants will be notified by telephone between June 16 and June 23.
