A few days ago, I was out taking some photos with my new Hoya HD CPL. Many reviews rate it as unbreakable. You cant even scratch it even if you bang it against sharp objects. check this demo out and you'll be convinced that its super dam tough.

Anyways after taking some photos, I noticed some 'dust' particles hovering around in the images. I thought, hey maybe its snow or smth... So I took out my cleaning cloth and attempted to wipe them off the filter. Low and behold, what I saw next almost gave me a heart attack. :bsmilie::bsmilie:

Lesson learnt, nothing is indestructable. :cry:
I'm pretty sure that impact didn't cause the filter to crack as I didn't hit it or bump into anything. The prime suspect is the cold weather, it was -10C that day so the repeated drastic change in temperatures of hopping onto and off buses could have caused a reduction in the fracture toughness of the filter. But i'm not sure.. Any thoughts on this guys?

Many reasons

It could be due to weather (temperature changes) cause the glass to expand or retract and there is insufficient room between the glass and the rim.

It could be glass manufacturing defect. I m in the construction industry and it is not uncommon to see the glass panel cracked by itself after being installed

Or for that moment, your super human strength suddenly materialize while you were rubbing and damage the glass.

(ok ok lame joke, don't kill me)

Now you can post 100% crop pics with and without the cracked filter, then can see how much difference in the picture quality.

@chalib
haha yeah... thanks!

@michaelyip
shhh!! dont tell anyone hahhaha

actually theres not much difference in the picture quality or rather, its exactly the same with a few dustlike dots . its just the fear that the filter will shatter and damage the lens. Already ordered another CPL heheehe

Wah! Must be your super-human bionic fingers applying nuclear-impact frequencies to the filter surface! :bsmilie:

Can you get it exchanged?

At any rate, I don't think many people realize that tempered glass can be more brittle (while it is harder) and that 'XYZ-resistant' or 'proof' is always relative.

nothing is indestructible.

put your filter at the point of impact of a nuclear explosion.....

I have dropped my HD on a rough earth once and surprisingly there was no scratch or paint feel off on the rim. I'm not sure whether temperature was the culprit in your case..

If you have previously dented the ring might possibiliy caused the ring contraction to be unequal, resulting in crack on the glass rim. Just a thought.

I assumed you used alcohol to clean the glass which it started to to crack further since alcohol becomes cold on evaporation.

Just let u know Hoya CPL without any reason also can break into two pics (the rotating ring and filter holder fall apart) but lucky I can fix it back.
By the way what is the size of your CPL filter? I would like to buy the ring holder for other purpose.

Lol... of course i know that nothing is indestructible and im pretty sure everyone here does too.
But the filter is freaking tough and scratch resistant haha

haha yeah HD FTW

Its 77mm totally new, about 2 weeks? i just bought it before i left. never dropped/knocked it b4. so im pretty sure its not due to impact. err dint bring any alcohol haha the lines were about 3/4 as long when i saw the cracks. then i tried hammering it to see whether the glass will shatter or form new cracks haha but it dint.. only the fractures started to propogate.

:) heng man.. heng... wait i better check my lens now haha
