Hi all, have just registered on CS to join you guys in the world of DSLRs.

I have been using a compact camera for a few years and was encouraged by friends to get a DLSR when they saw the photos I took.

I have done some small research and handled a colleague's camera and found the Canon 60D to be a comfortable camera for me. (The 550D feels small in my hands)

Personally I like to take landscape, pictures of animals and insects, however, I as I am just starting, I would like to use the lens in the kit until I have the budget to buy better lenses.
I would like to know, are there any differences (other than the reach) for the kit 2 and 3 lenses (18-135mm and 18-200mm) and which ones should I get.

Also, is it better to get it in funan now or wait till the IT show where they throw in more freebies? (I can't remember but I think I saw one show they gave a dry cabinet ). They also have purchase with purchase. What kinda of better deals can I get in funan that I can't get during the show?

Sorry for the long message.

Thanks in advance.

welcome :D

you should do more research. one point to take note, you're buying a system. what you're investing in are the lenses.

so you've only tried out Canon. i would encourage you to explore Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Hasselblad etc to find out what system you would like to spend the rest of your life (probably) with.

each system has its pros and cons, and each body has different features and builds.

don't be a frog in a well and decide on Canon just because you've touched one.

good luck ;)

Hi, Yes I understand the lenses part. However, I would put that aside after playing more with the kit lens.

I forgot I played with a Nikon before but it was for a brief moment. Yes, I have not tried other brands as I do not want to overwhelm myself with too many choices as I am quite indecisive. I also do not have the chance to handle them as all of my friends are also using Canon. I have read up on this model and handled it myself so I am quite satisfied with this model. Budget wise, this camera is also in my range (although I have not checked the prices for other brands)

I was intending to get the camera for an upcoming travel which is scheduled before the IT show. Not a must I have to get it before, but if the price at Funan is comparable with those during the IT show, I can buy before then and use it during my trip and play around with it as well.

Welcome:)

After reading a few of your post , I'm assuming that you would likely go for Canon for the time being so this is my advice.

Canon 60D and 50D image quality and function is more or less the same. If you are not into video, I would advise you to go for cheaper 50D and save some money for better lenses.

Technically, landscape photography is best taken with full-frame camera, canon 60D/50D is half-frame so might not like the results. Also, when you've decided to go for full-frame, you will have to throw out all your lenses.

Hi All,
Still wondering if I should wait for the IT show before getting. Are there any reasons not to do so?

I don't mind getting it early so that I can practice more before going on my trip. Unless it is more preferable to get it from the IT show.

Yup. Both are half-framed. And so is Canon 7D.

The IT show is what our generation call the "Fish Market". You won't wanna go to a fish market to make some important decision. Just need to clear your mind and decide what u really need. That won't happen in a noisy fish market.

this is a lil' wisdom. all the IT show does is to spur on your impulse buys (and you'll end up with stuff you will end up not using, and stuff you'll hate to use in the end).

but i'm still heading there anyways :bsmilie:

:bsmilie: I always like to use this silly term.

what term :dunno:
