technically you have shot closer. aesthetically both just as uninspiring.

make it interesting please, the purpose of 'going closer' is to focus on the attractive bits while eliminating the clutter. your 2nd image seems to be all about the clutter. it may pass off as an image in our geography textbooks but little else.

now you know what a close up implies, shoot something else.
