Drycreek has a rather good set of reviews of popular monitor calibrators that you might be interested in if you haven't seen it already:
http://www.drycreekphoto.com/Learn/monitor_calibration_tools.htm
What's nice is that their reviews of calibrators are constantly updated and the latest one is dated July 05.
The screens they test with are rather varied and reflective of the sort of screens many people would use - ranging from a top of range Artisan to a Dell laptop.
No comprehensive word about their test methodology though.
