Hi guys,

If i am to buy a lens for dslr, which first lens would you recommend? a micro one or a wide angle one?

can a micro one be used to a certain extent for wide angle? and vice versa, can a wide angle lens be used to a certain extent for close up shots?

THanks
Colin

what do u like to shoot first? ;p landscape or macro?

If this is your first SLR, I would suggest you go for a mid zoom first (eg, 18-70, or 24-120, or 28-200). It is versatile and can be used for many things. Play with it for a while to see what your shooting style is (ie, what is your preference, what kind of pictures do you normally like to take) then decide what other more specialised lens to get.

As for macro, you can shoot macro using a close-up such as 6T. It is a relatively cheap add on to a zoom such as 28-200. When you use it and find that that is something you really enjoy, then go ahead and invest in a specialised macro lens.

thanks alot. but am actually intending to use the camera for underwater shots. so its either i go micro or wide angle.

But would like to know tho if a micro can be used for a wide angle to a certain extent? or maybe its more feasible for a wide angle one to be used for closeup to a certain extent. what do u think?

Thanks,
COlin

I personally have not done underwater photography so cannot provide any useful advise. But it is a bit difficult for me to imagine macro photography underwater...

The design for macro and wide angles are quite different (one see big, one see small). I have not come across one lens that can do both.

a micro lens tends to "flatten" the image u get...its a fixed focal..... and if i am not mistaken only nikon has it....

a wide angle lens can come in the form of a zoom or a fixed focal....of coz which a zoom will give u more versatility ...say e.g. a 19-35.....

a wide can be used for close ups...but the distortion will not give u a good reproduction of size...a micro lens however, will give u a nice ratio...

a micro lens normally dun come in wide angle (if i am not wrong).... u can still use it for WAs ... but perhaps u have to stand very far away to fit everything in

so its all up to u whether u wanna take sea scapes or macros of individual objects ya.....

cheers...
