Merlion's 40th birthday celebration

SPECTACULAR LIGHTSHOW TO MARK
THE MERLION’S 40[SUP]TH[/SUP] BIRTHDAY IN SEPTEMBER
Far East Organization partners STB to present
“Merlion & I: An Inspiring Journey”

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and event sponsor Far East Organization (FEO), will jointly present this 7-minute show that traces how the Merlion has evolved to become a well-loved Singapore icon over the past 40 years. Complete with heart-warming stories, dazzling light projections, sound and pyrotechnics, the lightshow promises to be the highlight of the Merlion’s 40[SUP]th[/SUP] birthday celebrations.

“Generations of Singaporeans and scores of tourists have shared their special moments with the Merlion these 40 years. From wedding photos and anniversary celebrations to romantic honeymoons and exciting coming-of-age parties, the Merlion has seen it all as a stately witness and an iconic guardian,” said Mr Chew Tiong Heng, Executive Director of the Destination Experience Group at the Singapore Tourism Board.

“As we worked with schools and corporate partners to prepare for these celebrations, it became evident that the Merlion has evolved from being a man-made tourism symbol to a much-loved Singapore icon that continues to inspire. We have received enthusiastic support and participation from schools and the community in preparing for the Merlion’s 40[SUP]th[/SUP] birthday celebrations. These will be unveiled in September and we invite everyone to come honour, celebrate and remember Singapore’s favourite mythical creature.”

A musical celebration of the Merlion’s 40-year journey, Merlion & I: An Inspiring Journey, will be performed every evening with up to 6 shows a day. Those familiar with the Merlion can expect to be brought through a nostalgic walk down the memory lane and tourists seeing the Merlion for the first time will experience a more intimate side of the Merlion, one that has stood the test of time with Singaporeans and tourists alike.

As a home-grown company, we are delighted to be able to play a part in celebrating the 40[SUP]th[/SUP] birthday of the nation’s most iconic landmark with Singaporeans and our visitors at an exciting onsite party. The Merlion was inspired by a hope and dream for Singapore’s future, much in the same way that our company hopes to improve and inspire better lives. We look forward to continuing to grow with the Merlion for many years to come.” said Mr Lucas Chow, Far East Organization’s Executive Director.

The entire show production is helmed by a creative team of budding and seasoned talents. The music and lyrics of An Inspiring Journey was written by music director, Mr Kenn Chua, who has produced concerts for celebrities such as Corinne May, Kit Chan and Stefanie Sun. Lending his vocals to the song version that will be heard during the show is local artiste Mr Jim Lim, who was the member of the popular local group Dreamz FM. Separately, an MTV version of this song has also been recorded by another local artiste who was awarded “Most Popular Newcomer” at the 2010 Singapore Hit Awards, Ms Serene Koong, for release on social media.

The show will feature four high-definition 3D projectors will cast a spectacular array of lights and colours on the Merlion with designs created by Mr Andrew Gardner who has worked extensively in South East Asia, in particular, Singapore, and designed the lighting of Singapore’s Esplanade Theatres of the Bay and also overseas projects for Disney, and West End Theatre productions in London. Adding to the visual impact will be a giant 8 metres by 4 metres LED screen that will be set on a floating pontoon facing the Merlion. With a surround sound system installed around the Merlion Park, audiences can expect a complete sensory experience during the show. An energetic street dance, comprising hip hop and street jazz, choreographed by Mr Ryan Tan will accompany the song. Mr Tan has previously choreographed dance segments for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Youth Olympic Games, and also, the “One Voice” choir for National Day Parade 2010. Pre-recorded dance segments involving 5 schools and 125 students will also be incorporated into the show.
