Melbourne accomodation recommendations?

Hi guys,

Planning a trip to Melbourne in August, would like to ask you guys for your recommendations in accomodation. Not looking for too expensive a place, motels would be best since we'll be hiring a car.... Any recommendations on places to stay?

Any where along Swanston St would be convenient.

Do pay a visit to the gardens with Cooks Cottage, & another gardens called South Carlton. (or similar Carlson name). Beautiful. U can reach these gardens easily with the free tram, with a little bit of walking.

swanston st is ideal. there's a supermarket opp. train station nearby. Subway (sandwich) at the doorstep.

the weekly market is nearby as well. security is good as there is a time lock on the front door and security cameras.

Staying at Swanston Street is like Orchard Road, it's busy and crowded everyday.

You might want to try the St Kilda area accommodation since you've a car.

PS: Is Mt Buller worth going? Just to see snow?

you better check the weather reports for mt buller. last july i was in melbourne and planned to go but found out last minute that snow barely covered ground.

I think Hotel Enterprize is pretty worth it. If you're not looking for high-end that is good. You can also try Victoria Hall.

If you plan to drive up Mt Buller, check on the weather and take note on how to use the snow chain.

Strongly recommend driving to Great Ocean Road/ Ballarat/ Phillips Island.

I checked out Victoria Hall online but they do not seem to have ensuite bathrooms. But thanks for the recommendation though!

Cancelled the Mt Buller idea already, going to Dinner Plain instead, 10k east of Mt Hotham, cos got SledDog Race 2007 on the days I'm there. Friend in Melb said I dont need snow chain, cos I'm renting a Subaru Outback AWD vehicle. Hope the camera and myself wont freeze... -7 degrees...

I stayed in Miami Hotel for a few days before we got an apartment in the city. Its more of a temporary student hostel than hotel. You will have shared bathrooms and breakfast is provided daily. Quite a walking distance from the city. The other 2 are within the CBD area.

Thanks for the inputs! I actually heard quite alot of good reviews for this place. However, my friend & I decided that Miami Hotel is little too far from the City. But I managed to find another place which is right smack in the heart of the city.

At the moment, I might go ahead with this place. Clean beds, ensuite bathrooms and air-conditioning. Sounds good enough for me!

Good thing is that they even have outlets in Sydney. If I like the outlet in Melbourne, I might just book with them when I'm in Sydney. I'll be spending a week in Melbourne, then driving up to Canberra, and lastly Sydney.

You are a city block away from the Elizebeth St tram terminal. Very convenient for food and other amenities. Mac, Hungry Jack, KFC and some delis(which serves $1/slice pizzas) are within walking distance. Victoria Market is on the other end of the street. For getting around the city, forget about driving, you'd be better off using the trams.

TTT, there's extra snow this year at almost all resorts courtesy of La Nina ... so safer to have snowchains. Someone I know just came back from Thredbo and said the snow's better there this year than he's seen in years.

As for accommodation, what's your budget ? I know of a very nice serviced apartment (Saville on Russell) on Russell St (near the junction to Little Bourke), that'll probably set you back $200 per night but you're right in the middle of everything. Parking's $7 a day, IIRC, but as Hertz is down the road, you can just drop off the car on the days you're hanging around town.

Medina Apartments on Queen St are supposed to be quite nice and reasonable.

BTW, prepare well ... the temp's not too bad (single digits) but when the breeze picks up, it can bite.

All the major car rentals are along Franklin Street. Don't know about the rates now but a Camry goes for $500+ a week, extra insurance for drivers below 25. Think it would be cheaper for a week's deal than having to rent the car on a daily basis.
