well, to use ur javelin example, is it possible to throw well without the formula? is it possible to throw well without practice?
anyway, in DEFENCE of formulas, i'd say most of us know the basics, like exposure (+ one stop, double the light), which to me is a form of formula also ;P
this blur formula, might be good for those who want a specific shot, have very little time to setup at the shoot, but lots of time to prepare and calculate beforehand. good to know for a few, but probably not something most photogs even need to know
