UWA - Ultra Wide Angle lenses -

Full Frame - Shorter than 24 mm in focal length
Cropped Frame - Shorter than 16mm in focal length
Micro Four Thirds - Shorter than 12mm in focal length

Definition of UWA - *Postal
Micro Four Thirds, (1) (2)

After taking some shots with a recently bought UWA lens, I realised that this is the most unusual lens from any other lens I have tried so far. Mastering or at least getting the hang of it properly because of the high lens distortion will require different technique. Namely perspective distortion. My "normal" technique can't really quite apply here.

Hence, my search for articles and guides in any media that will explain and show how to master the UWA lens. Most search results are mainly which is the better lens and general discussion on such lens.

Please do contribute your experience and share any technical knowledge or techniques when using any of the uwa lens.
You may also let me know the url to more sites of similar nature. Thank you.

Interesting! Subscribe to your thread :)

BTW, how come Tokina 11-16 f2.8 is not included in your list of Cropped Frame Zoom Lens?

Hi, sigma 12-24 on FF D700 is sharp though heavy and large size for walkabout. Field of view is 122 degree. For DOF, get as near to subject as possible, say 6 inches.

U mean magazine articles comparing the UWA lens? I remember What Digital Camera covers a topic on it but I dun remember which issue... I help ya check it out...

 informative! bookmarking for future references.

Found it... What Digital Camera Issue Aug 2009... :-D

Battle between Tamron 10-24, Sigma 10-20, Tokina 12-24 and Sigma 12-24... Sigma 10-20 is the winner (I am using it... wahaha!!!)... :-D

Canon 17-40 on FF is also missing.. :D

This is something I was contemplating about. At which point do you consider a lens uwa or just a wide angle lens. Therefore, I am think using 16mm as the maximum limit of a UWA lens regardless full or cropped even though cropped frame has a 1.6x or 1.5x factor. The Canon site say that this is a super wide angle 17..... for a cropped frame lens to have an similar zoom in is 11mm... Let me think about this.... anyone has any idea?

For cropped sensor, anything below 15 mm is considered UWA...

For Full Frame, anything below 24mm is considered UWA....

I will say include Canon 17-40. :bsmilie:

Instead of using focal length, perhaps you can use the FOV as a criteria. Since the FOV of Canon 17-40 is wider than Nikon 12-24. Just a suggestion for you to consider..

Great effort!
