Perhaps try shielding the lens from the light source (street-lamp perhaps) from the top left. May eliminate the flare by doing that.

No. I think the flare destroyed your photo. The photo is also a little too far right. Moving left to include more of the Esplanade grounds would be nice. The little bit of the walkway jutting out of the right corner is extremely distracting.

Agree with xray that the flare distracts from the main subject. Of course, one man's drink is another's poison...
You could try positioning your left hand or a piece of cardboard (make-shift) to block the street lamp if you don't have a lens hood handy.
Agree with xray that cropping the right side of the picture, plus giving the left more space may work out better.
But that's just me...

Perhaps try using the "clone" tool from Photo Shop to eliminate the flare and see if you like the results better....
