I am going to Las Vegas for the week of June 24. I just bought a Canon Digital Rebel XT with a Tamron len. I am a newbie so I am looking for picture taking tips from all the experts in this forum. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

bring your tripod along.

LV is a nice place...not really for photography, but for the shows, casino, strip clubs etc. You might already considered going to Grand Canyon for a day or two, you can take some snaps there. If you're driving, I'd suggest Antelope Canyon further eastwards.

Have fun!!

The newer casinos are mostly designed round a "theme", so taking pictures in and around the buildings can also be quite interesting.

I will be going there 2 weeks earlier than you, but brining only a P&S. Think should be sufficient for me.

yep..have a tripod for decent shots of the lighted casinos from outside. the interiors are not that bright..so unless u r shooting some subject..a tripod may also come in handy..

i'll be going there this friday with my D80 and a PNS. will be bring along a tripod as well

So when you take a night shot of Vegas buildings, what settings should you use, other than using the tripod, which would be important? Thanks.

I'd use Tv mode...~3-8secs..depends on if you like like trails of light made by cars etc. sometimes >20secs is needed. Then ND filters might be needed. I've a few pictures of my travels to the area, www.perqjon.com/DV_Vegas_GC/index.html. Personally, the place is great of shows, casinos, strip clubs etc. Photography-wise, I'd prefer the national parks!

Check out those popular postcards of las vegas. That'll give u an idea which angle is best to shoot at. May be a "shot to death" kinda pic, but hey, at least its possible for stock photography. or one of those iconic pictures most people, if not everyone, knows is Las Vegas. For eg. that neon lighted cowboy 'Vegas Vic'. I think that'll be pretty cool.

and yeah, damn ur lucky!

Thanks for the tips, everybody.

I usuallly go to Vegas once a year. That city is awesome. The only thing I hate about that city is that I will have to leave and go back to reality.

Yet to go there but i believe using tripod in hotels/casino is almost impossible. E.g. crowd and security.
