Hi Guys,

For those looking for an inexpensive film scanner with Digital ICE.
This is the best deal.

The Acer (BenQ) ScanWit 2740S.

Currently SLS is selling at $799.

I manage to find a Acer dealer that offer me $780. Anyone interested, we can have a mass order to get further discount.

extreme2,
So many reviews you collect...haha...sure buy?

I was tempted to get the 2720 last year before deciding to get a digital camera instead. The 2720 is one of the cheap but good film scanners back then and the 2740 should be better.

One good point is that the scanner uses the faster SCSI II interface instead of the much slower USB ones. Allows faster transfer of image data to the PC :)

is ICE really necessary if i dun scan old film?

YES YES YES !!!!!!! ICE saves you time retouching up the photos, before I got ICE, I need to spend at least 15-30 mins if I want to properly erase the scratches and dust. Hence multiply that by a small number like 10 scans and the time you save will be quite huge.

don't suppose it comes bundled with a SCSI card...

might be bundled. If I remember correctly, the 2720 comes with a scsi card. If not, the card would be less than $100 for a SCSI II interface.

ah ok thanks! hmmm that's a very tempting offer... DSLR or good film scanner? hmmm... decisions decisions...

so many gadgets, so little money... :D

Hi Guys,

They are not able to give us a demo, because they only do distribution and they do not have the necessary equipment for the demo.

But I'll be getting a set next week. Will be delighted to demo it for you guys. ;)

That will be absolutely cool. Thanks for the trouble. :)

go Nikon Cool Scan IV !!!!

1.1k, if you guys mass order, maybe can get lower.

dunno about other people's experience, but I think the interface does not matter much (at least with the CSIV), the main reason for the slow speed seems to be the slow scanning.

maybe Adam with his 4000DPI scanner can say if the interface makes a difference in the transfer time.

The FS4000U @ 4000dpi produce 3780 x 5669 x 42-bit files, so each image is approximately 112.5MB. I think transferring this through USB 1.1 interface is going to be painfully slow (like emptying a 128MB CF through a reader).

Think the interface makes a big difference. For a 4000dpi scanner like the FS4000U, the interface should be IEEE1394. Or can use the scanner's SCSI interface as well.

The scan times of the Coolscan IV and the ScanWit seems similar though (~40s). So what remains is the transfer time. :)
