Rising trend of loanshark harassers using fire a concern - Channel NewsAsia

Loan shark harassers setting houses / doors on fire to get attention. What if they chain the gate, trapping the residents inside. If the fire gets out of hand, the residents will be burnt to death. What if they also set the houses of the borrower's neighbours on fire, in a bid to embarrass him?
How did it degenerate to this?
Because all along the police have been treating loan sharks with kiddie gloves. And the loan sharks get more bold.

This should be treated as the same type of offence as discharging a firearm in a robbery, because of the great threat to human lives.
Suitable penalty should be imposed.

you should have watched the Crime Watch just now.

they plan to topple from the top, because just catching the small fries at the bottom doesn't do anything to them.

and to do that, takes considerable planning.

How come the an average person knows where to source for a loan shark to secure a loan but our SPF don't know where to look for them? If they (loan shark) got no 'buyers' then no business!

Of course we always hear that the SPF wants the real bosses but if the bosses don't have operators, how to run business? Or rather if their operation cost is so high, how to run business? End of the day, our SPF just got to work harder. Maybe this is not SPF core business?

...
How will setting fire to the neighbor's house embarrass the borrower? And why would they want to embarrass someone instead of breaking their legs? I thought they want their money repaid.

If my house were set on fire because of my neighbor... well... it's on and few will have ever seen such fury!

It is a common practice by loan sharks to attack the houses of the borrower's neighbours.
This has been going on for years already.
The loan sharks think that by doing so, it will make the neighbours put pressure on the borrower to pay up.

they do know, contrary to what we think.

do you think the SPF is as stupid as the Americans to come up with reality TV shows documenting, down to the finest detail, how they hunt criminals?

never ever reveal how you get things done, just like how a magician never reveals the tricks of the trade.

Try implementing 6 strokes of cane to those bullies & 12 strokes to their bosses then see if they still exist..

i remember years ago in Nat Geo or Readers' Digest. there was an article explaining how 2 rival gangs managed to get hold of documents detailing police patrols and crackdowns on their activities.

basically, there's a legislation that requires the courts to publish on their website details of all warrants and applications for Operations. so the police applied for it, and it was posted. so that's how they managed to evade the police :bsmilie:

I disagree on this.

By revealing techniques, the police department deter more people committing crimes. If Potential criminals they know that there's a high possibility they'll be caught, they'll not commit crimes in the first place

Prevention is better than cure

Instead of spending time and resources catching criminals, it's better to invest time/resources in preventing them. When a crime is committed, property or lives would have already been lost.

By your reasoning, the flaw is that once the tactic is known, there will be ways discovered to outwit and outplay the police.

Criminals are not as stupid and simple as you make them out to be. If they want to commit the crime, no matter the deterrence employed, they will still find ways to do it.

We all know the penalty for drink driving, but drink driving is on the rise. We know gang fights are deadly and the punishment is heavy, yet there's a rise in violence among youths. So your point is?

Forensic science encompasses a wide field of advanced disciplines which take years of higher education and work experiences to build a foundation upon. I doubt anyone can become an expert just by watching a season of reality TV despite how detailed they may be.

same with how some people here create/post in threads passing judgement on people not even found guilty yet by the courts.

i wonder if sitting behind a keyboard makes one a certified lawyer or a judge :bsmilie:

Interesting. That would be dangerous where I come from.
