tried.. no shiok.. with the drop shadow, at least it gives that 3D effect.. as it is seperate...

I tried to do a effect similar to yours but somehow i have problem with the free transform of the selected area. How do you manage to rotate the 'selection area' without having the actual picture in the selected area being rotated as well?

Okay....... use the select tool and make a selection.. then:
1. On the tool bar: SELECT>TRANSFORM SELECTION>
2. Then you are free to rotate the selection box in any angle
3. double click the selection to set it.

The effect isn't visually outstanding.

There are two things that u want to achieve with this effect
1) the 3D effect
2) the contrast of the coloured subject on a monochrome background

However, i find the 3D effect isn't prominent enuff. Yeah, the drop shadow is there, but somehow the shadows fades away in the dark gray tone of the boulders.

Also, the contrast between the coloured and the monochrome isn't intensive enuff. The coloured background inside the frame is mostly gray (rocks) with white (sky), which is similar to the monochrome background outside the frame, thus resulting in a rather flat effect.

Try to use another pic to push out the drama of this effect.

You might want to do a layer copy and then apply some water colours, e-sumi, rough pastels for anything that is outside the rectangle. Not sure if it will work but it might...
