RAFA TAKES EXPENSIVE KEANE GAMBLE

Posted 03/02/09 08:00

The decision to sell Robbie Keane has been depicted as a victory for Rafa Benitez in his power struggle with the rest of the Liverpool hierarchy, but he appears to gave gambled with Liverpool's title ambitions.

As Keane was sold without a replacement being bought before the transfer window slammed shut last night, Liverpool's titles hope now effectively rest on the fragile hamstrings of Fernando Torres. Were the Spaniard to suffer injury between now and May then the decision to sell Keane - at a substantial loss and without the player himself agitating for a move - will surely spell doom for Liverpool and very possibly Benitez himself.

Ironically, it emerged last night that Spurs' pursuit of Keane had become a matter of necessity after Jermain Defoe was ruled out for ten weeks with a fractured foot. Nonetheless, despite their clear need to acquire new firepower for their quest to avoid relegation, Tottenham were permitted to re-sign Keane at a cost of just £12m only six months after selling him to Liverpool for over £20m.

At the very least, Benitez's decision to sell Keane is an expensive risk, with the Spaniard accused by Fleet Street of being prepared to risk jeopardising Liverpool's title push so that he could flex his power at Anfield.

While The Times has expressed its bafflement at Benitez's 'willingness to freeze Keane out as a means of illustrating his dissatisfaction at the vetoing of a move for Gareth Barry', The Guardian states that 'Keane's exit marks a significant political victory for Benítez, the Liverpool manager who is seeking greater autonomy over transfers at Anfield'.

The striker is described as being 'a pawn in the power struggle between Benítez and the club's hierarchy' with Benitez as 'the main force behind Keane's departure. His success indicates he now has the backing of at least Hicks over the club's transfer business'.

Yet it is the club's failure to become a buyer in the transfer market yesterday even when it became clear that Keane would return to Spurs that is perhaps the most baffling aspect of the saga.

Torres has only recently returned to first-team action after an injury-plagued few months and on Sunday, for the top-of-the-table clash with Chelsea, the only striker on Liverpool substitutes' bench was David Ngog. To date, the youngster's Premier League career consists of six appearances and no goals. While Keane's form at Liverpool may have been patchy, his record is that of a proven goalscorer and he would have represented viable cover for Torres during what is likely to be a frenetic few months before the season's conclusion.

In a short statement released through Tottenham's website, Keane described his venture at Anfield as "not the right move". The Times reports that 'he was almost tearful as he said farewell to his team-mates and staff at the club's Melwood training ground yesterday'.

As the newspaper summarises, 'He was touted as the missing link. Now we are about to find out just how much Liverpool will miss him.'

RAFA: WHY ROBBIE LEFT LIVERPOOL
Paul Eaton 03 February 2009

Rafael Benitez today revealed why he allowed Robbie Keane to rejoin Tottenham just six months after arriving at Anfield.

The Republic of Ireland striker yesterday completed a deadline day return to north London after failing to establish himself in the Liverpool team on a regular basis.

"Sometimes good players cannot settle down in the team and when this happens you have to consider the situation and try to react quickly," the Liverpool boss explained today.

"If it is not good for the team then it is better for everyone to make a decision and because of the situation in the transfer market and for the opportunity for the player we had to do it now.

"I have to analyse things and try to look at the bigger picture and this means thinking of the club and the team and what is best for them."

Benitez admits reducing the club's striking options at this stage of the season is a risk - but he feels it is one he had to take.

"We still have Babel, Ngog and Kuyt as well as Torres. It is a risk but the situation was not good and we needed to do something," he added.

"Now I would like to wish Robbie the best because although things did not work out he has been working hard for us.

"He was trying to do his best and the key was that Spurs showed a lot of interest and they were pushing really hard for him.

"The player needed to play and he was not doing that as much as he would have liked with us.

"But I cannot criticise him in any way because, as I have said, he tried to do his best for us."
