Electronics giant LG won its preliminary injunction against Sony in a patent battle over Blu-ray playback technology, a civil court in The Hague, Netherlands ruled. This means that all new PlayStation 3 units imported to the UK have to be confiscated for at least the next ten days.

The Guardian reports that in the past week alone, tens of thousands of PS3 consoles were seized by customs officials in the Netherlands. The 10-day injunction could even be extended, causing many consoles to disappear from retailers.

The report suggests Sony has about two to three weeks worth of PS3s left in stock around the continent remaining. If Sony is found to have infringed on LG patents, it could cost the company hundreds of millions.

Sony has stated it's investigating the matter.

Sony itself fusses over copyright issues.
20 or 30 years ago when Sony had the Minidisc market sewn up; it refused to make it easy to digitally record and subsequently transfer the recording to the PC & CD / DVD? It could have owned the whole music market in the world and especially the USA 20 years ago.
But maybe lawyers were ruling Sony internally. Too bad.
Sony handed the multi-billion dollar music market to Apple on a silver platter. Apple boomed with the iPod and iTunes & later the iPhone.

While it is true that Sony handed the portable music industry to Apple, saying that Apple is more open and allows for easy transfer of music is really way off and forgetting history. Of all music players, the i-devices are the most closed and the most restricted. Early iPods were totally locked too - it's only in recent years where they opened up more.

If anyone handed the digital music business to Apple, it's not Sony - it would be Creative. They were sitting on a gold mine but rather than marketing things creatively to a fashion-conscious mass audience, they invented "geek friendly" devices.

Not an Apple fan. Do not own iPhone or Mac computer. Apple is also into restricting users' access and usage. Hence the term to "jail break" the early iPhones. Windows PC has lots of free software that are excellent, so the outdated XP is good for me.
