Lenses, what does it al mean?

Hi all. I am a total newbie so please excuse my ignorance. I am totally baffled by the varios types of lenses and their specific uses. great, so we have macro lenses, zoom lenses, fisheye etc but what does the technical jargon mean to a newbie eg, 18 - 55mm, 70 - 300mm etc.

Can anyone please put me onto a site that can explain all this in simple english.
