Am getting a 50mm 1.8 prime for my 1st DSLR.
Would like to find out from the experts:
If you had only 1 choice, would you take the 50~200 or 70~300 Zoom lenses?
And which of the particular ones within each category would you recommend?
(There are simply too many!!! And the reviews for each are all good - I am spoilt for choice)

I would hold back my horses and see whether i really need those lenses.

It would depend on budget and purpose, together with personal preferences and other factors we can only guess about - since you haven't provided any context.
Since you are new it's best to use what you have (get the kits lens) and get other lenses once you are more familiar with equipment. If you don't know what to buy you most likely don't need.

Second to octarine. Try out the kit lens and perhaps the 50mm first before further commitment.

To answer TS question:
I will go for 70-300 for longer reach, but personally I'll look for Sigma version
