17-50 mm f/2.8 XR Di II or AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED better ?

price of course the latter more steeper , but for usage on events like wedding and fashion shows , which is better ???

The latter len AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED , i really cannot afford, or is there any other lens that can replace 17-55 mm ???

Some user feedback on the

Nikon 17-55mm
and the
Tamron 17-50mm

The 17-55 has lots of raving reviews on this forum as well.
I have tried my friend's 17-55 last yr during an event, and i was pretty impress by it

I would choose the 17-55 if budget allows

I sold my Tamron 17-50mm and Nikon 18-200VR just to get a 17-55mm. It is in a class of its own. The tamron is pretty good but in terms of IQ and especially built quality, it is still behind the 17-55mm. The 18-200mm comes nowhere close in terms of IQ and contrast but is light and has VR.
