I did a search but didn't find this info been posted here before so I thought I will share the link: http://www.lensrentals.com/news/2009.11.01/lens-repair-data-35

They have over 2,500 copies of various lenses for rent and the statistic can tell us a bit on what kind of problem to expect from the lens that we own.

Here is the top five:
.........Lens.......................... Annualized Repair Rate......... Typical Problems

  1. Tamron 70-200 f2.8 ................41.5% ...tight mount (Canon), autofocus, manual focus, zoom mechanism
  2. Canon 17-55 f2.8 EF-S IS .......29% ...IS failure, AF electronics, ERR99
  3. Sigma 120-300 f2.8 ...............28% ...zoom mechanism, calibration, autofocus
  4. Nikon 80-400 .......................23% ...electronic issues, zoom ring, autofocus motor
  5. Canon 50 f1.4 ......................19% ...autofocus motor

A very informative data dude.. But these should not be absolutely taken for someone's purchase decisions as individual handling of equipments differ a lot. I've heard cases where the VR mechanism failed due to user negligence (Didn't turn the camera off while mounting / unmounting the lens)
