Which lens is good for the above purpose? Especially when you need to take care of the baby alone, and wanted to take a quick snap?

Assuming newborn and usually indoors, for me i find a big aperture and external flash (for bounce) very useful (direct flash not too good for babies). i use 50mm 1.8. but i wish i have a 30mm as i am using a crop camera. not too sure about the more pro ppl though....

Is 50mm too far? My friend says it is, trying to borrow one and play...
Zoom lens better or prime lens better?

I am now using the 50mm F1.8 to take my sis's baby photo.
I am using Canon 450D.
The big aperture really helps for indoor shot.
I have attached one of the photos that I have taken for the baby.
No flash is used.

Sigma 30mm f/1.4

How far away from the baby do you need to stand?

Sorry, 50mm doesn't mean anything to me yet...

if you're alone and want to take a lets say 6 month old baby full length covering from head to toe... baby should be about 18 inches tall?

a 50mm is jusssst about right... you would have to stand about just below a meter away to get the whole baby into the picture...

this is assuming you are using a crop camera... x1.5 or x1.6

if you are using full frame.. the 50mm would be perfect

thats why the 30mm + (x1.5 or 1.6) will get you almost the same thing...

Don't know if you realised, but the focus is on the foot, not the face.

Try and borrow one; it's way easier to visualise and test whether you are familiar with the distance. No amount of description in words will help you.

I'm upgrading to D300... so its not going to be full frame...
It is just a hobby, no ROI to get D700, unless someone wants to sponsor... :p

lol, of course I realise that.
In fact, I purposely focus the foot for that photo as I want to capture that moment when he is holding his leg.
Maybe it is not a good photo but my sis loves that.
Thanks for your comment anyway.:)

even ordinary 18-55 kit lens will do as long as you have external flash.

as per composition wise, seem the foot does not belong the to baby.

It would be difficult using f1.8 or worse still f1.4 if the baby moves fast. Your shots will easily go out of focus. Use flash, bounce the ceiling if you don't want to cause the baby to suffer 'temporary/partial visual impairment'.
