Lens for band gigs.

Been getting some enquiries for band performance jobs. Thing is until i get my 70-200 f2.8, dont really have anything good for lowlight but a job is a job so maybe will KIV the 70-200 f2.8 for a while. Highlighted the following Primes in US$.

Sigma 28mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro $349
FA 50mm f/1.4 $350
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC $439
Sigma 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro $449

*Pentax SMCP-DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited $340
*This one is convenient since pancake lens so easier to line up the shot in the crowds but f/2.8 would be cutting it close imo especially since in the realm of 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DG $350 pricetag.

So far FA 50mm f/1.4 $350 and Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC $439 looks promising so am doing some research. If you guys have experience with them, do say.

Hm, i always thought gig lenses tend to be 50mm or more... Maybe because i am never the official photographer... Lemme dig for some pictures i took recently with the M50 1.7 and the 135mm 2.8

NOISE @ Esplanade, with 70-300mm, i can't imagine shooting less than 50mm, unless you get on stage or constantly knee in front of the stage











Well, they look really really blurry at 1024px, probably due to the slow shutter speed. But that's beside the point, what i mean is, i think the FL of 70-200mm is a must.

DA* 50-135 f/2.8 was probably made for shooting band gigs. ;)

Many reasons to use wide-angles and short lenses for gigs and concerts... interesting perspective and ultra low-light hand holdabily.

what level of access? also, are you sure your clients necessarily want atmospheric photos?

the lenses you list, obviously can be used, but if you are being thrown below the stage and shooting upwards, good luck with producing anything interesting with wide/normal lenses.

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this in some other post, but oh well.

I've shot gigs with a 43/1.9, 50/1.7, 135/2.5 and 70-300/4-5.6
It all depends on your position and what perspective you're looking for. I'm usually shooting from mid range at my leisure. (at my seat. I don't bother to go up front)

Many reasons to use wide-angles and short lenses for gigs and concerts... interesting perspective and ultra low-light hand holdabily.
A UWA would make for some interesting angles, but have to take into consideration whatever limitations and restrictions.

managed this in an event with kit 18-55mm really up close to the stage.


these are with zoom lens..also from up close.

I definitely need to invest in faster lenses.

Alternatively, you could invest in a K-x for low-light venues. Costs about the same as the lenses you've listed. :dunno:

nothing beats purchasing a better lens, High ISO just means you have to loose more details even it has really clean JPEG output.
