Hi, I am a amateur photographer who is interested in bird photography.

I have an Olympus 70-300mm lens (140-600mm on Olympus E-510).

I'm not sure whether is it really 600mm when I zoom it totally.

Can I have any advice from Olympus users?

Yep, for birding, get the longest lens you can afford basically.

some use 55-250 mm on 1.6X crop body...

seriously if you are an expert. Its not about focal length. birding can even be taken using 100mm to 200mm depending on yr style of approach.
