Hi fellow ClubSnappers.

i haven't been running for the past almost 4 years due to recuperation from knee surgery.

right now, i feel that i'm up to the task, and would like to start running again.

can anyone recommend a good brand/type of knee guard for running? and martial arts. would also like to hear about your experience

brand as in brand, type as in Open Patella, Close Patella, Patella Cushion or the wrap-around type... etc.

Thanks in Advance!

Better ask a real physiotherapist or sports med doc.

Here, you'll end up with kopi licence doctor advice.

Instead of running, why not go for low impact such as walking and swimming?

Running is found to be more damaging than benefits due to high impact, cardiac stress

Walking has same or more benefits than running.

U just recover, dont damage your knees again by running.

Another low impact is cycling

Bro i'm in e same shoe as u. Knee guards does help but one thing i'v realised is that e way u run matters as well. Look at those 5 toes shoes. It suppose to make u learn how to land on e ball of your foot instead of the heel. If u think the shoes is expensive, try using your normal shoes but land using the ball of your foot and try not to lift your legs too high. Very diff to explain le. But it does help. Unfortunately, the pain will still be there. Just less only. So happy running.

Best is to avoid running actually. Do more hiking and other sports which is less impact on the knees. I'm alternating between blading n running nowadays.

Yeah knee guards help alot but not totally. The doctor told me to stop running and playing tennis so I stopped for more than 10 years. However after buying the five fingers shoes I realized running doesn't hurt my knees and feet anymore. Think it's cos I changed the way I run. Yet to try marathons and tennis though but doing plyometrics is fine. The trick is to land softly and on your toes. :)

To TS: better recover fully before you attempt running. After you recover, try barefoot running first? Don't bang your feet down and heel strike when wearing running shoes. The former makes u waste energy and the latter will cause injuries. :)

erm haha thanks guys Cowmera and AdyH.. forgot to mention that i'm a martial artist too. using the ball of my feet for motion is second nature :bsmilie:

i used to run barefoot too, but it'll just cause more injuries due to nothing cushioning the impact

My few cents,
There are a lot of gadgets and gizmos out there, promising this and that to make ppl part with their money.
Instant gratification always feels good, so easy to fork out money and have a peace of mind that it will solve the problem.
The thing is, running is a high impact activity. A strap/guard of some sort will only prevent shifting of bones and some RSI due to weak muscles (as they help hold them up).
Its not going to help much for impact strain.

Talk to your doctor/physiotherapist and see what they recommend.

I'd say look at shoes/inserts and running style/gait.
Start slow and low intensity to build up bone, ligament, muscle density (and this may necessary for quite a while ).
Maybe even start with brisk walking.
Trail running is also far less straining (even using the grass patch on the curb)

Otherwise, as suggested, do other sports like cycling, swimming, brisk walking, rowing, etc.

Gd luck.
Hope you get back your fitness.

i've been doing weights and ab exercises for the past 4 years hahaha. but recently i've been looking at my photos and realized that i'm too huge. my arms and shoulders are big and i can't fit into shirts properly :bsmilie:

as for the running... i feel that my knee is up to it. the doctor said 1 year and i should be running. but i guess my body took longer to recuperate

Also consider that recent studies show that running with the proper form can spur the body to grow cartilage as well. So it can actually really help.

anyways bro any web info on that injection you told me about? what's it called again?

Yup, it's hyaluronic acid. Popular brands are Hyalgan and Synvisc.

Hmmm.... Huge as in u train your upper body and let your legs be skinny? No offense to u, I'm just curious cos I see many guys at the gym with nice upper body and chicken legs. If that's the case, your knees can support your weight?

Since u r a martial artist, get your master to use qigong to heal your injury? Go up the mountain to find your grand master? Ok jokes aside.... Can consider acupuncture to improve healing. :) The injection sounds good too.

HAHA. no way. my legs are powerful too. i can lift the entire stack of weights in a leg-lifting machine with one leg for 20 reps, no sweat. pretty darn good for a girl who can do that :bsmilie:

Contrary to current beliefs, running does not have to be a high impact sport if your running form/technique is correct. That is it can have the same impact as walking. There have been several studies completed on the biomechanics of running. This article will probably be of interest to you: Reduced Eccentric Loading of the Knee with the Pose Running Method - by Nicholas Romanov, Ph.D., REGAN E.ARENDSE, TIMOTHY D.NOAKES, LIANE B. AZEVEDO, MARTIN P.SCHWELLNUS, GRAHAM FLETCHER; SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH and POSE METHOD, Medicine and Science in S

I would invest money on learning Pose. See here: Running Technique Specialists available worldwide. Looking for a running coach that will help you achieve best results? Look no further - here's the List of Pose Method® Certified Coaches all over the world Why Pose rather than Chi? Because it has been scientifically proven and backed by studies on biomechanics other than the ones Dr Romanov has been involved in. Go on a course before you purchase a pair of running shoes because gait analysis is performed by people who have no clue about biomechanics other than to sell you a pair of shoes!

Good luck.

Wrap ice cubes in towel over knee.
