Hi everyone,

After my last sharing on the Fujinon XF16/1.4 and the Fujifilm X-A2 with XC16-50 camera kit, be prepared for a lengthy review haha.

Fujion XF16/1.4 : http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1514916
Fujifilm X-A2 with XC16-50 : http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1513374

This time round, I am pleased to be sharing on the:

1. Fujifilm X-T10,
2. Fujinon XF90 F2 LM WR
3. the new AF system that will be released direct on the X-T10 production sets and later to be made available on the X-T1 as firmware update version 4.00.

As always, I would like to acknowledge Fujifilm Asia Pacific for their generosity in allowing me to loan the X-T10 and XF90/2 for the writing of this review.

Note*: The X-T10 and XF90 F2 LM WR loan sets were both pre-production sets with pre-production firmware.

Note*: The write-up here will focus on being a user-review and you will not find the typical MTF charts and itty-gritty comparisons that sites like LensTip.com excel in, they will do it and they are the professionals at it. I am just a beginner level casual user end of the day and prefer to share my personal experiences.

X-T10, the daily companion for life’s everyday moments.

For user lamenting the weight and size of the X-T1 but finding the ability of the X-A and X-M cameras lacking, Fujifilm has finally released a camera worthy of filling in this gap –

The Fujifilm X-T10.

17002298504_cd862e2268_b.jpg

with the XF18-55/2.8-4 mounted.

The X-T10 combines a compact body furnished with magnesium alloy for the top and bottom plates and comes in a sexy sleek all black finishing too.

The X-T10 is a worthy evolution of the X-T1 and X-mount family, being equipped with a new AF system that excels at capturing moving objects. A reworked set of controls maintains the balance between providing better handling while ensuring any Fujifilm X-mount user picking this up will instantly be at ease with the familiarity of its controls.

To start, let’s discuss handling first:

17624805475_7459045d2d_b.jpg

A big improvement is that the X-T10 marries the ease of operation of the X-A and X-M series with the seriousness that professionals desire in the X-T and X-E series by equipping the camera with an Auto mode switch level for SR+ mode selection. SR+ mode is Fujifilm’s intelligent auto-mode and it works very well, selecting the right scene most of the time.

17438494959_95f0494310_z.jpg

There are a good variety of scene modes under SR+. The user can choose to allow the camera to decide which mode to select or define the Scn mode to work with. My 3 most favorite Scn modes are : Portrait Enhancer, Landscape and Flowers.

Another noticeable improvement is the integrated pop-up flash, allowing one to optimize the Super intelligent flash the Fujifilm is known for too. No more missing the moment because I had forgot to bring the clip-on flash.

17438494249_6f4cf5c010_b.jpg

With thought for the advanced user in mind, the X-T10 comes with 2 command dials and 7 Fn buttons all customizable. In SR+ mode, pushing the back command dial immediately brings up the different Scn modes while in PASM mode, the front and back dials allows Shutter Speed and Aperture size adjustment.

the front command dial as shown.

The back of the camera includes the back command dial, D-pad, buttons for Fujfiim’s Q mode, AEL, AFL, Play, Trash, Disp/Back and an additional Fn button.

Display wise, one is in for a surprise with the immense improvements.

17436959868_7388d2da88_b.jpg

The X-T10 comes equipped with a 3 inch 920k dot tilt-screen (YES, a tilt) allowing one to shoot at angles previously inconvenient to capture.

The EVF of the X-T10 has been drastically improved from the X-E series and in its own league and akin to the X-T1 EVF.

The X-T10 features a real time organic electronic viewfinder equipped with 2.36mil dots and a display lag time of 0.005 second (or simply 1/200 of a second) that automatically controls display brightness according to ambient light levels. The live view display can also be set to ‘Preview Pic. Effect’ to offer a view close to what the naked eye sees.

17624799645_c83a369237_z.jpg

The diopter adjustment is to the left to the EVF allowing ease of adjustment.

Like its larger sibling the X-T1, the X-T10’s eye sensor automatically orientates the info when the camera is positioned vertically. This is currently only available on the X-T1 and X-T10.

Sensor, Processor and AF system.

Lets now move to the heart of the camera and the fully overhauled AF system in the Fujifilm X-T10.

The camera features Fujifilm’s APS-C 16.3 megapixel X-Trans CMOS II Sensor and the EXR Processor II engine. The LMO (Lens Modulation optimizer) engine that allows the camera to compensate for each individual lens model characteristics is also included for maximum best image quality.

In short – this X-T10 is as powerful, if not currently better than its higher end sibling the X-T1 which will only receive its firmware version 4.00 update at the end of June.

Slower AF has always been a perennial complaint about the Fujifilm X-mount system and the company has listened to feedback and released the a new AF system for the X-T10 (coming to X-T1)

The new AF system offers the conventional 49-point single point module as well as new Zone and Wide/Tracking modes that for high-speed precision shooting and tracking moving objects. At CH (Continuous-High) mode, the camera is capable of delivering 8 fps.

Video Link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaoIZXA5RMM

I’ve tested the new AF system by shooting my kid (High performance mode, Zone focusing and AF-C) and the result was almost a 80-90% hit rate. This is an improvement that will have current X-T1 users proud and new X-T10 users satisfied. (X-T1 users, do remember Fujifilm didn’t make you buy a new camera instead like what most brands will do)

17598478966_f4f7092eeb_z.jpg

The X-T10 also comes equipped with the Fujifilm film simulations, of which Pro-Neg H and Velvia are my favorites.

Together with the X-T10 body, I was also loaned a pre-production set of the XF90/2 for testing. Do note that all images shared were taken with a pre-production set running pre-production firmware.

The XF90 F2 LM WR

Fujifilm is proud to announce the Fujinon XF90 F2 LM WR ( which I will refer to the XF90/2) offering a focal length of 137mm (35mm format equiv) and with a maximum aperture of F2.0 – a high quality optic ideal for portrait and sports photography. A FL of 137mm gives good subject isolation too.

(R = dedicated aperture ring, LM = Linear motor, WR = Weather resistant)

17598496336_3b0edfca97_b.jpg

The XF90/2 is designed to deliver absolute sharp images with rich bokeh and comes in a construction of 11 elements in 8 groups (3 ED glass elements). Care was taken to deliver a rounded diaphragm for rounded bokeh.

A newly developed Quad-linear motor does the heavy lifting in the compact 540g lens, giving the user a min working distance of 60mm and AF speed as fast as 0.14s (CIPA guidelines, high performance mode)

In the same category as Fujion pro lenses, the XF90/2 is dust and weather resistant with 7 seals on the lens barrel alone. Operating temperatures goes down to -10 degrees.

weather sealing (in green)

The lens sports a filter size of 62mm with a angle of view of 17.9 degrees, providing aperture adjustments from F2 to F16 and has dimensions of 75mm x 105mm (diameter x length)

Done with the sharing of both the X-T10 and XF90/2, I’ll proceed to share some photos taken with the X-T10 and various Fujifilm lenses (photos will show the lens used) in many everyday situations.

In the 2 weeks where I had the loan set, I really enjoyed the Image quality, improved AF system (especially the accuracy) and of course, the lightness of this compact smaller sibling sharing the same guts as the X-T1.

I’ve categorized what I shot over 2 weeks by the lenses I use. Not much comments here as after all the photos are main characters here and I don't think you all want to read too many words.

Sharing the same sensor and processor as the flagship X-T1 mode, the X-T10 proves to be very competent and presents much more confidence in AF with the revamped AF-system.

and obviously of course not forgetting the newly released XF90 F2 LM WR lens, a professional lens designed for portraiture shots and more.

The XF90 F2 LM WR mounted on the X-T10 proved extremely great to work with, with capturing even the smallest subjects needed the most accuracy one can get.

Testing the New AF system with settings:

high performance mode, AFC and Zone tracking with the 18-55/2.8-4

17624862631_a7622fceea_b.jpg

A composite of shots of my kid walking around stitched using Fotor. (I was using the free verison so the resolution is lower)

The hit rate was an impressive close to 80%-90%, a huge improvement from the other versions of AF systems Fujifilm has, especially on the focusing accuracy portion.

Two of the original shots to show the accuracy of the image capture. The accuracy of the Af system not just in AF-S has increased, but even in AF-C use.

The same AF system will come to the X-T1 model in end June as a firmware update version 4.00.

This is one of the longest sharing I have done here and I think its now only proper to stop haha.

In all, I will say that for anyone who wishes to use a camera setup that delivers, whether you are a beginner, enthusiast, professional – The Fujifilm X-T10 with the suite of lenses I shared here is really a strong contender to consider. After all, it shares the same heart and guts as the X-T1, Fujifilm’s flagship model.

Personally, the X-T10 is a superb choice for users who are overwhelmed by the X-T1 and wish to have the freedom to switch between the SR+ auto mode and PASM modes when needed.

I will definitely recommend the X-T10 for beginners to start as they move into enthusiasts or the professional X-T1 user who needs a competent backup camera.

*Disclaimer.

1. The XF90/2 and X-T10 were returned to Fujifilm Asia Pacific at the end of the loan period.
2. I have placed an order for the X-T10 (sob sob, my pocket)
3. the XF16, XF18, XF18-55, XF56 used were either mine or my friend’s.

Thank you for the time spent reading here and I really hope my sharing was useful.

Any questions, pls do feel free to ask and I will try my best to answer.

Lastly, just a shout out to all about Fujifilm's launch event for the X-T10 and XF90/2 at Funan from this 28th to 31st May. The launch will coincide with SG50 celebrations by Fujifilm and a photo exhibition by X-photographer Ivan Joshua Low plus many interesting talks by the team of X-photographers included newly included street photographer Mr Chia Aik Beng.

Belinda Lee will also be fronting the camera launch on the 30th May afternoon and there will be hands-on sessions for everyone.

Dear Keith,

is x-t1 supposed to have the same AF performance as X-T10 after the firmware 4.0 update?

Dear Keith, is x-t1 supposed to have the same AF performance as X-T10 after the firmware 4.0 update?

Should be, the same AF system is slated for for the X-T1 in end June and all the AF features found in the X-T10 will also be available in version 4.00 for X-T1.
