Just bought a new camera

a Sony cybershot dsc-h3....comes with a lithium ion battery

do we really need to charge it for 8 hours first?

I know the strong urge to get out and shoot. Just grab a magazine to past the time and wait for the 8 hours to fully charge the battery. In this way, you won't shorten the battery lifespan.

Anyway, I am not aware if there is really a need to charge for 8 hours on first charge. Just follow instruction.

Oh. I totally forgot about this rule.. But my camera batteries last.. 2 days, with like 800shots a day bah
