Dear all,

Need help here... I just bought a used 10D body and trying to find myself a couple of lenses. Prefer one "walk-around" (is this what you call it?) lens and one zoom (200mm or 300mm) for nature/wild-life.
Forget about the L for now. New or used I am OK, total budget S$1,200 for 2 lenses.
I am eyeing the Tamron 28-70mm f2.8 ...and Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO super macro II. Not sure the above are good choice and fit the budget. Your advice would be much appreociated.

Thanks

Canon 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 might be a good choice too. It can be had for quite cheap second hand and offers a wider view compared to the 28-75.

btw, the sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 APO Super Macro II is a good buy at its price. for lenses, you might want to get 2nd hand to save costs.

shameless advertisement: buy my Tamron 24-135 :D
do a search on CS; you will find pretty good reviews on it.

Thanks ppl for the suggestion. EF 70-200mm F4 L is very tempting. If I could find a used one at around $900-$1000, (new one quoted by MS is $1300) I may consider forgo the wide lens for now and use all the budget for this baby. The F4L looks large, and does not come with collar, not sure if it needs a collar when mount on tripod, any experience or suggestion?

Thanks.

Get the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 Di. It's on my camera 90% of the time.
Forget about the L lens, it's over-rated and over-priced. I don't trust Canon lens anymore.

at your budget of $1.2k
1. tamron 28-75 f2.8.. used one u can get at $500 or less.
2. tokina 80-200 f2.8.. the pro version.. used one u can get at $600-$700.. though cathay photo used to sell $650 brand new to clear stock.

add a bit more.. and u can get sigma 70-200 f2.8.. for the extra reach u can add 1.4tc at later stage.

Looks like I am all set for a Tamron 28-75 F2.8 Di.
I need a long zoom as I shoot wildlife and nature stuff.
Can Tamron 80-200mm f2.8 use a 1.4x or 2x TC?
What is the price for a sigma 70-200mmf2.8 and TC?

Thanks.

Just a kind reminder 10D is digital camera with a 1.6x factors change 28mm is not wide euongh for alot things. With $1200 I will consider second hand 15-35 sigma or canon 18-55 and fill blank with a fast 50 f1.8 then still have euongh for a second hand 70-200 f2.8 sigma or canon F4L for another two hundred dollar more. I belive there second hand tokina or tamron super wide angle zoom you could get. A mid range zoom is not very for the 10D but good to have for things like street photography, but still lack in the wide department. ;)

used sigma 70-200mm around $850-950 depending on condition.. the 1.4 or 2xtc around $200-$250.

Thanks guys for reminding me the 1.6x factor. After reading some articles so my understanding is a 28mm-70mm will actually become 45mm-110mm range on the 10D right? Let me ask a newbie question, what do you mean by "this range is not wide enough for a lot of things?"

singscott's opinion for $1200 budget is:
- a second hand 15-35 sigma or canon 18-55 (Price: ? )
- and fill blank with a fast 50 f1.8 (Price:Used-??; New-$130, MS)
- then still have euongh for a second hand 70-200 f2.8 sigma (wilis 128: $850-$950)
- or a canon 70-400mm F4L (Used- ??; New-$1300, MS)

There are so much to learn, further comments are welcome.

Hi L.Lee

Think you will not be able to use Canon 18-55 for your 10D (for the fact that it is a EF-S mount lens.. suitable for 300D & 20D)

"this range is not wide enough for a lot of things?"
My thinking.. in an enclosed area where you do not have the luxury of space... you may not be able to captures everyone in the photo...

Have not tried out the sigma 15-30mm lens. If AF speed is an issue with you... then do seriously consider 17-40L (personal thinking)

Just bought a 2nd hand Sigma 70-200 F2.8 for my zoom lens... did some comparsion with the Canon 70-200 F2.8... In terms of picture quality... seriously able to match its output... however... two minor issues... its front bokleh and it AF Speed (HSM loses out to USM).. If you seriously do not need the F2.8... do consider the Canon 70-200 F4, for the fact that it is lighter, AF faster...

My two cents worth!!! =)

I mean to say increase your budget by $200.00+ Shop abit. A used sigma 15-35mm around $550 and a second hand canon 70-200mm f4L is around $900.00 just wait and shop around.

As the phase the range is not wide enough mean at the range your 28-70 is 45-110 so you have no wide angle. Shot like landscape, group shot, interior of room and other thing that need wide angle are hard to do. :bsmilie: ;)
