carrying bags of stuff is a primitive form of strength training :) so b4 i took the lift to go back home, i stopped by the fitness corner and went straight to the chin-up bar. then i put down all the plastic bags and hang ed at the bar.

one, two, three..go!

then i realised that i could still do 15 chin-up. not bad ah ;) then my thoughts ran back to last time ...hmm:

sec1: 0 (well, only 1 or 2 blokes in class could do soem decent form of chin-up back then..lolzz! )
sec2: 5 (max)
sec3: 11 (max)
sec4: 14 (max)
army: 10 on "maintenance days", 12 on "standard days", 15 max on "performance days". well, this kind of standard remained till today

till now..i never did more than 15 chin-ups  :bsmilie:

anyway the story was a bit diff for my peers...for their case, until jc time, they did like 7 or 8 chin-ups only. it was army time that beefed them up..the last time i met them back in nus was like they were doing an average of 16 or 17 chinups   but well, they r really dedicated when it comes to strength training...doing like what 3 to 4 times a week...a bit too much for me ;p  lolzz...me rather maintain emphasis on cardio :)

Cool ! I used to be able to do lot of chin up like you, maybe 12 -15 for IPPT, but not now. :(

When you are tied down by work and personnal committments, you will find youself not having much time for physical training. Sad to say, that is life.

Go and ask if there are any present canoeists around and don't be surprised if their max is more than 30. When I was one in JC, we do chinups like nobody's business everyday. (100+ before morning assembly) :D

But of course now old liao and don't train as much...

ah yeah..good that u mentioned...totally 4got about the canoeists  wow...i still have mental images of last time those jc canoe team dudes...very beefy..then the canoe gals look like very one

Alex Lowe, the late mountain/rockclimber used to do 100 chinups as warm-up prior to a big day's climb; French climber Fred Nicole does 1 handed, 1 FINGERED chinups using his pinky only.. Now, THAT'S impressive! :bsmilie:

this kind of standard too obscene already..can die one ah  :faint: :bsmilie:

all the while my life is 0 pullup... in BMT hit 6, then in unit life, back to 2(FAIL!) then now going to ORD, can hit 6.... wierd huh... then one year back, we dreaded the life runs for AHM.. now im looking forward to it, in fact i dun clear leaves on run days so that i can run...coz i know when im going to work, im sure im not gonna have time to workout or run like in unit.besides sundays(work is 5.5 days/wk)of coz one day a week is not enuff... well. thats life

lol
sec 1 - 6 cheat
sec 2 - 7 cheat
sec 3 - 8 cheat
sec 4 - 8 cheat
j1 - 16 cheat
j2 - 25 cheat
army - 7 slow for training, 10 normal speed, 15 using a liiiiitle bit of momentum for ippt.

lol

when i mean cheat
i mean jerk and use momentum

could do none in j1 and damn tulan
so everyday go train with my friend 3 times a day.
nothing to do also go pull
after a few mths, can do 22

but because i very thin and light

In NS I was in the Provost precision drill team. We trained 4 days out of the week and I had biceps the size of papayas. My record for chin up was 35... now at age 34, I can do 5 on a good day! Still working on number 6...

i also dunno how many i can do...but most prob ard 12 only...every lunch we do...they say do 8 i nice nice do 8 and come down...no more haha..

waah SPDS ah :) last time lao jiao muz be very garang ah? Now the drill standards cannot really make it liao. Go see the COG parades, the standards just get worse and worse.

Clive, u can swim so many laps but only managed 15 pull ups?? When i was reading ur "marathon swim" thread, i was halfway btwn shock and admiration!
Anyway, my personal best was in training too, abt 20 standard, 25 if cheated. My instructors used to force us to do 20 pull ups 3 times a day. If we failed to reach 20 pull-ups, we will have to do 10 push-ups for each one we 'owed' him. Some of the bigger sized cadets had 'debts' of 1000+ push-ups within the first month.
I think pull-ups are quite unfair for a test of strength, body weight and muscle mass matters a lot. some big sized people may be strong but not strong enuff. small skinny people can be unfit but manage to get by coz they're very light - esp if the bone mass is low too.

You are very right. Smaller size guys are able do more chin up than those really beefy large muscle guys. Large muscle good for power, lean and trimmed muscle good for endurance.

sec 1 - 3
sec 4 - 17
Poly - 22
BMT - 27
Unit - 29
Now - 15

wow...the idea of pulling @ the bar like "almost everyday" is chilling    even up till now, after one dayof any kind of workout, be it strength training or cardio, regardless of what, i wil need the next day to rest.

the swimming thing..hehe..is just a ironman-inspired, simulated experiment, restricted to pool only..havent gone to open water yet..so its nothing much actually. yupz..the arms do get a fairly decent workout, particularly @ deltoids area, but my freestyle style is very flaccid one: arms mainly for extending into water, "grab" onto water @ the spot, breathe in/out & hips rotate the whole body...& my legs almost never kick one...so its just flaccidly gliding thru the water...& its quite slow as well ;-) anywae i asked my friend 2b canoe escort for me @ east coast but he said he as a wind-surfing escort can already but i still feel that windsurf escort not as "safe" as canoe escort leh..so upto now havent goto open water yet ;p :bsmilie:

but yah, u got a point..this also makes me ponder about IPPT..come think of it, ippt is largely anaerobic  stuff like 2.4, chinup, situps, etc..all focussing on the individual's ability to sustain a considerable effort in engaging in raw power over a sustained period of time (well, even thou the duration is only a few minutes). in theory its in line with the perception of the "average joe" engaged in combat scenario?

fitness..generally its accepted to be of 3 main conponents:
1.cardio
2.strength
3.flexibility

hard to keep up with all 3 ah =)

also depends on your body type:
1.endomorph
2.ectomorph
3.mesomorph

but most of us are a combo of 2 of the 3 types

hehe paiseh with the fascination with fitnes stuff..sighz.all these came about when 13 years ago i was chronically ill and lying awake in SGH ward in the middle of the nigth..the usual story ah ;)

Chin-ups?

Erm ... I just bought a few tubs of ice-cream back from the supermarket ... :bsmilie:

:bsmilie: :bsmilie:

I just had bak chor mee and popiahs for lunch.

Sign, after not training for abt 1 yr (since last NS IPPT) i am back to doing 2-3 pullups. If I train for 2 months I can do about 8. Pull ups are hard for me I need to exercise alot to gain muscles, then I lose them quickly.

sec 1 ~ 1
sec 2 ~ 2
sec 3 ~ 5
sec 4 ~ 8
jc ~ 8
BMT 1st week ~ 8 drop to 0 (muscle fatigue)
BMT ippt test ~ 8
Unit ~ 17
ORD ~ 8
Now ~ 8
