Job Exp or Degree?

Eh, actually, I'll also like to know how bad can eczema get in the drier seasons?
Cause my eczema has got worse recently.. patches over the legs and hands, and spots appearing all over..

Do a search for "Aveeno" for your eczema problems.

Yea I do know a degree opens up opportunities, but working for a big company is like 'gold-plating' your resume as how one of my friend put it.

Is it possible for either one or the other to be delayed without the risk of loosing the opportunity? e.g. you go to work in the US for 2 years, come back or stay there to study.

Yea, of course I can study when I'm back.. Problem is, there aren't courses of my line to study in Singapore (at least, currently. The degree I was talking about earlier is only vaguely related to my line), and when I'm back, I've to be bonded to a company for 2 years. So if I get a degree, it'll have to be done part-time.

Studying there isn't an option, cause of the cost, and also because of the bond..

go for the experience, then work the degree part time along the way. My friends started work right after poly, I went on to get a uni degree, and there's no much pay diff between us now. To count back the years I've put in uni earning only enough to cover my daily expenses and incurring a debt for pay uni fees, I am a poorer man than most of my peers now.

Of course, having a degree in my field opens up more opportunities, so there's no regret going down the uni path for sure

Ohh.. this is comforting to me as I am thinking if I am underpaid. I graduted from poly and start to work. After two of working, I joined a part degree course which last for 4-5 five yrs...after which I got a job using my degree. And I thinking if I am being short-changed....

Franky speaking I am hiring manager and there are two candidates: 1) degree-holder with 4 yrs, asking 3.7k 2)diploma-holder with 6yrs asking 3.4k....most probably I will hire the no.1 unless no.2 have certain experience which is critical to work.

At least, you must need to work in a big MNC company.
It is always easier to job hop between big MNCs but not from small to big.... ;)

yes..
agree
BIG MNC name add value to ur resume
then oversea work for BIG MNC.. even add more value

I had a friend..
work in small or local company as engineer.
when he hop to a MNC .. he only got AE title..

If in MNC, u hold that title.. when u job.. ur title will be there or higher but if small to BIG.. ur title might be lower.

amazing story.. care to share his qualifications?

I've been in a contradiction for the past week.. hopefully I can get some insights and inputs here..

I've a choice to continue education and get a degree, vs going over to the US to be attached to a big company for working exp. The only problem is, I've eczema, which I guess will get worse in US during the dry weathers. Being in the design industry, a degree is just a piece of paper, what matters is my portfolio. So now I'm torn. Part of me wants to go over, part of me don't want people to worry bout me.

how long is the attachment? If you are aware of it, you could apply for the university to hold your place for you until you are back from the attachment. That is if you want to come back. if not, you can always continue your education there. You can save the money from your attachment and lighten the burden of your education.

Make the neccessary arrangement and plan. If you clear about what you do, then others will worry less. Most times, they are just worried about your welfare.

Having said that, the reason we go to the university is not just for the paper qualification, but to learn and experience from history and what others have done, so that we can build on it.

I have a problem with eczema and alleic rhinitis. I find that its due to the humidity, and when I am in the UK or US or other places with low humidity, the eczemia and rhinitis is gone. As good as new. In fact, the drier the weather, the better it is better for me.So, if you have been to the US before, you would know what it is like. Find out the cause of your eczemia.

I go for experience... once you get the experience, you paper qualifications become secondary. If you've got 10 yrs exp and superb recommendations as well as a superb portfolio, doesnt matter if you didnt pass O lvls or not, companies will headhunt for you.

The attachment is for a year to year-and-a-half. I think the biggest concern right now is with eczema. Whether it'll flare up due to the weather over there. I can easily get a degree when I'm back in Singapore (I've to come back after the attachment).. The doc just prescribed me with steroid pills just now.. I dread it. :thumbsd:

the base level for poly engr grads is AE, promotion to Engr in his prev company with no relevant work experience to support the role, will not warrant the same status. There are lots of variables and points to look at when hiring a new employee only when you have gone through the process will you know what a big headache it really is.

Trying to tell who has the real stuff and who is bluffing. When in doubt and yet the candidate looks promising, I would rather err on the side of caution and offer him a lower postition for probabtion to monitor him. If he thinks and performs like an AE, he shall remain as an AE but if he is good and excels as an Engr, he has all the rights to talk to his manager about it and ask for a recommendation to promote him to what he deserves. IMO, your friend probably looked promising but didn't have enough to proof that he is worth the engineer title, that's why he was offered the AE post.

The notion that working for MNC is goldplating the resume is really just that, gold-plating, nice on the out side with no ingredients on the inside. Everyone gets a very specialised field of work to do and does that very well, a small company will require you to BSBH and do everything, this way there is a lot to learn.

Thanks everyone.. I've decided to go with the work opportunity. Just have to take better care of my condition over there.

:)

like you said, design is based on your portfolio, especially if you're over in the US. So I'd say job experience.

Get some steriod cream to apply on your ezcema from your doctor. I am using Hydrocortisone 1%. It should help you to sooth the condition, and avoid the itch. Get lots of moisturiser and apply them every day. Lip balm too! You really need to take care of your skin given the dry conditions.

Have you applied for an extension from the university? Do so, so that your options is available at the end of your stint overseas. The working experience will help you in your studies. Mine did.

I am going to Florida and New York in Sept....Can't wait!

Enjoy your stint, and don't forget to post lots of travel photos for us to enjoy!
