1. my inner vision calls for 400mm. coz 500mm is too long, and 300mm is too short. ie i dont want 500mm, i dont want 300mm. i only want 400mm.

2. the dream lens is Canon EF 400mm/f4 DO USM IS

3. any kind of 400/2.8 is too heavy, too expensive. any kind of 400/5.6 is too slow. there is tamrom 400/4 but that one is manual focus. i dont want 300/2.8+1.4x tc coz its not a pure 400mm. AFS200-400/f4 VR G is too heavy, too expensive. minolta 400/4.5 is still not f4. and the AF is slow. sigma 50-500 contains the 400mm but its too slow (5.6). any kind of xx-400mm zoom i dont want coz its not a pure 400mm prime. (and all of them end at 5.6 anyway) and the 70-200+2x doesnt cut it either (f5.6, not pure 400mm) i have searched and there is no third party lens maker that makes a pure 400mmf4 autofocus lens.

4. so does is mean i got to no choice but to suck thumb and force myself to pay and buy the canon EF 400f4 DO? or wait until either tamron/tokina/sigma come out with their own version of 400mm/f4? which is like..well, probably never, u know..

uh. problem. i think the 400/f4 DO IS costs MORE than the 400/f2.8 on street price... :p

400mm gives 4 times the area of a small object/subject compared to 200mm. so you are justified in wanting the 400mm. but like my good friend advised me, i'm one of those jokers who hold a long lens, and fire off machine guns at mosquitoes in front of me - and the joke is that i'll end up shooting EVERYTHING except what i wanted to shoot. :p

evidence? i goofed up my first official golf shoot today. sigh. :(

Wah, 400/4 DO cost more that 400/2.8??? Where got a 400/2.8 at so cheap a price?

Think a lot of ppl will have a 400/2,8 at that kinda price!

wahhh, I'm learning something new every day.

argg sianz..either i wait or i pay. both of which i dont like to do

i read the recommended list price from canon sg's site earlier. it does list the 2.8 at 15.9k, and the f4 at 12.4K. but i gathered that with previous mentions of DO being expensive etc, and came up with the conjecture that the f/4 was more expensive. apologies for the boo-boo...

clive, just remember this - after hearing what that friend told me, it does seem most of the time the long lenses, if they dont belong to pro's, they belong to the same class of jokers who are acting pro... (includes me too :bsmilie:)

pro or not doesnt really matter ah...as long as my inner vision remain pro can already :bsmilie: ...haiz sianz...dunno why so suay suay my inner vision demands for exactly 400mm and exactly f4...scarly one day i go make my own lens :bsmilie: nvm lah..i try to make my inner vision less demanding =)

however, i do know for sure a 400/2.8 can masquerade as a 400/4... and no one can tell the difference

masquerade?? the size different leh...impossible la..

or the lens made by u one? if so...u go to the lab, make a 400/f4 for me, and sell at good price to me gd ah? :D

actually i meant... the f/2.8 lens can produce visuals same as f/4 by stopping down. but you can't do it the other way round... ;)

ah..optically of coz can masquerade

1. Change your inner vision.

2. Olympus E1, the longer zoom lens gives EFL 400/3.5 at the long end, and (IIRC) it is lighter and smaller than the 70-200/2.8L.

1. haha... that means implanting a new Inner Vision filter plugin to clive's head

2. but the bokeh would belong to a 200/3.5, wouldn't it? that's what i see as a minus point for E1...

btw ST1100, did you receive my PM regarding the shoot today?

eee...cannot la..i dont like olympus :bsmilie: :D

Sehsuan, the 400/2.8 is supposed to be one of the sharpest lens Canon makes (the others being, the 85/1.2L, 200/1.8L, 300/2.8L). At F/4, the 400/2.8L will eat the 400/4 DO for breakfast! Especially since the DO lenses are known to produce strange looking ripple and halo artefacts.

woah
200/1.8

no idea where can get..
hmmmmmm
