I'm using a FZ20 and so far it has served me very well, F2.8 throughout it's 12x zoom range is superb, no problems with macro shots too, nice pics.

Is there even a need to upgrade to a full DSLR? If so, how about budget 2nd hand cam? Don't want to spend too much yet :D

if it is serving you well then

you do not NEED to upgrade
you WANT to upgrade

btw going to a DSLR will mean starting from scratch
kit lenses do not normally have f2.8 throughout

kit lenses normally cannot shoot 1:1 macro

depending on camera, you might have to compose through the viewfinder
and can no longer shoot video

i suggest renting one to try it out first

I'm using my viewfinder most of the time in fact, of course it'll be good to have live view while mounted on a tripod. The new Canon 1000D is a direct replacement for the 400D, is that a good investment?

Even then, I wouldn't want to spend that much from the start. Probably a 2nd dual kit lens e500 is easier on my coffers :D
