I thought of getting a tele-converter for my camera.

When I go through the camera manual, it say that when using a tele-converter, one need to set to max. zoom. Otherwise, the picture quality may not be good.

Does it mean that tele-converter is only usable at max. zoom?
If the range for my lens is 28mm to 300mm; does it mean that a 2.0x tele-converter only allow me to take (good) shots at 600mm and I can't use it for any focal length between 56 to 560mm (after 2.0x)?

Thanks for your advice.

a teleconverter is an optical element and hence degrades the picture quality. if you have a zoom lense covering 28-300, then it is advisable to use the teleconverter only for the range of 300-600. Below 300 you get better quality pictures without the teleconverter.

You can use your 2x tele-converter for 28mm-300mm zoom lens to shoot from 56mm to 600mm.

But, as others already mentioned, TC (or any additional lens element in light path) will degrade the picture quality, also decrease the light by 2 stops (IIRC). So, use 28-300mm (without TC), and 300-600mm with TC, which is 150-300mm zoom.

Regards,
Arto.

Try to do some quality tests on your 28-300mm with tripod
Shoot different focal lengths with different apertures like
28mm - f5.6, f8, f11, f16
50mm - f5.6, f8, f11, f16
100mm - f5.6, f8, f11, f16
200mm - f5.6, f8, f11, f16
300mm - f5.6, f8, f11, f16

So if you get "very" good quality at 300mm f8, with 2x TC, you will get good quality while shooting at 600mm f16.

What about getting a teleconvertor for a 18-55mm kit lens?

Would it be good to go?
i don see why you wan to add tc onto a wide/standard lens... effective focal length is just 110mm... with the cost of tc at 200+, might as well get a tamron 70-300.

the only 2 lens i use tc on is my 28-75 for close up(1:1.85) and my 80-200 for reach (400mm)

I dun think you can mount a TC on the 18-55mm on the wide end without risking the lenses coming in contact with each other.
I dun own the 18-55mm to actually try out.

There was someone trying a TC with a 18-200mm VR, but the rear element is too near to the TC for my comfort.

If I'm not mistaken the 18-200 is not supposed to work with any TC?

It is in the manual if I'm not wrong?
