Is soft filter needed?

experimenting on shooting make over, experiencing hard and harsh lighting on the face when using flash even bounce off the ceiling. is a soft filter needed? if so any recommendation please? if not how do u guys do it? 10Q v much.

Try flash exposure compensation.

ceiling bounce is giving the most softer light you can get from the hotshoe flash, you may like to check:

#1 the ceiling, is it highly reflective?
#2 your bounce flash angle, is it tilted too low till the light spill direct to the subject?

Try stretching a stocking over the lens... it can work as a soft filter too...

so u dont need a soft filter to have the soft effects?
hot shoe mounted flash with ceiling bounce + a reflecter place blow to fill the suubject is enough? will try it out.
how about studio lighting like soft box and umbellra flash? is it a need to have this kits for makeover? thx..

Maybe try powering down your flash a bit, or if the flash is still too harsh, can try an omnibounce and then bounce it off the ceiling again.
