loosely translated, with a single glance can you tell the difference between a person playing with a dslr and a pro making a living with a dslr?

No, not necessarily.

I've personally seen and been with pros who fool around with DSLRs in their hands and they look like any other hobbyist, and I've seen and been with serious hobbyist who look damned 'pro' when they handled a DSLR seriously.

agreed, some pros like to dress down, some hobbyists like to dress up.
sometime pros just bring bare minimum go for paid shoot, sometime hobbyists bring all they have to go and shoot "models"
from the projected image, can be rather deceiving.
the best way to tell, is see the created work, WITHOUT editing, STRAIGHT from the camera.

btw, your title thread and question in #1 are asking different things.

.
these ways you may discover two types of pro .... the snapping pro and the created work AFTER editing, the PS pro

generally, for the public, the most popular way to spot "pro" is to see the size of the cam and the size of the lens :bsmilie::sweatsm:

bring a 600mm to shoot insects at the botanic garden...

Well, I have seen this uncle who's a lone-ranger, sniping flowers at SBG using a (looks like) 400mm f/2.8   :bsmilie:

That may explain why some people like to swing around with big big camera gears. :bsmilie:

he maybe shooting humming birds, don't judge too quick before seeing the photos..:)

Over water lilies? :bsmilie:

But you have a point Ben. Too many people think they die die see something whan what the actually 'see' is different from what they perceive.

he MUST be a pro ....

DEFINITELY, ABSOLUTELY, MOST CERTAINLY, MOST ASSUREDLY based on the popular way peopl judge the level of a photographer! :bsmilie:

only the resulting image matters

even if image is very good....if he dress like beggar, talk like gangster, behave roughly, body smelly because no time to bath (too engross in photography), will he get employed as wedding photographers? :bsmilie:

like that, he makes a good photo journalist... cos most of the ppl will simply stand far from him and he will be at a corner shooting.
