I sent my kits lens to NSC cos got squeaking sound when AF , the warranty had expired and was quoted $141.00 for
replacing SVM motor. Should I proceed with the repairs, considering the price of 18-105mm is about
$300 in the 2nd hand market.

You said it. Get a new one. Or maybe its time for an upgrade

save the money for repairs, and get the tammy 17-50 2.8 secondhand, more worthwhile i guess...

Since the warranty expired i assume its a well-used lens, let it retire and use the money for upgrade:)

But i only used it for less than 10 x .
is it true this is a common flaw with 18-105mm. saw in a lot of forum complaining about squeaking sound in nikkor kit lens,
i think it is a manufacturing defects , what do you reckon, can I ask for a foc replacement instead??

warranty over how to ask for FOC replacement?

you need a reality check :)

anyway it's only a squeaking sound right? Does the lens still work? if it does, why not just use it for as long as possible?

the xmm's will look pained when your camera squeaks at them? :bsmilie:
well, I agree it's kinda unglam, but as long as it doesn't make a sound that resembles farting, or burping, I would heck care and use it till it breaks :bsmilie:

but i don't shoot xmm, so I guess my opinion doesn't count...... :embrass:

Used it less than 10 times?

No wonder it squeaks.

if it is really a manufacturing defect, i feel nikon should repair foc just likeToyota cars which had serious manufacturing defects causing unintended acceleration problems
furthermore, it seem that i am not the isolate case, a search results shows many similiar issues. I reckon nikon will service it for free.

I hope what you read what was specified as the problem...
is this lens seldom used? if so, it is probably becos the lub in the gears are drying out. my ex 17-35 had the same problem. fatigue (aka david) told me just use it more often and the sound will go away.

And please, toyota cars are recalled only because the defect can cause accidents and BODILY HARM to the users.

But if a toyota car is seldom used and never maintained, if something breaks and cause a problem due to that inactivity, it is the OWNER'S fault..

You can reckon all you want. I encourage you to bring the lens into NSC... let us know if you really get it fixed for free... LOL.

please, you are taking this a bit too far.

toyota's recalls were as you say, a "serious manufacturing defect", and as you also say, "causing unintended acceleration", which will lead to accidents and death.

i don't really get your idea why you view a squeaking lens as a "serious manufacturing defect" especially since it occured beyond the warranty period. welcome to the world today, where everything is not made to last.

are you going to say next that a squeaking lens causes accidents and death?

Maybe I should send my car in and demand for an FOC repair to my wheel joint because of some mild creaking from wear n tear! How dare they! It's a manufacturing defect! My car should be squeak free throughout it's entire life!!!! :complain:

Haahahahahahaha :bsmilie:

just collected my kit lens after repairing.
i am happy that NSC only charge me $48 (for parts only) after some "swee" talk. nice gesture from NSC Singapore. Initial quote was $141.00 inclusive of labour.
in life, when you ask you will get it.

But it ain't free...

Anyway, I think they feel embarrassed to charge you 141 for a lens you can buy almost new for 150.
