If you're comparing the "reach" of a P&S with a DSLR with a particular lens, convert everything to "35mm equivalent". For P&S this is usually given, either by manufacturer or on one of the more reputable review sites. For a DSLR, remember to multiply the focal length with the crop factor (if any). With the 450D the factor is 1.6, so a 300mm lens on a 450D has a 35mm equivalent FOV of a 480mm. A few superzoom P&S actually reach farther, BTW.

A cheap zoom lens (55-250mm) will set you back slightly more than $300, less on the 2nd hand market. I don't recommend the 75-300mm (I have it - image quality is only average under best of conditions). The 70-300mm IS is much more expensive but image quality is much better.

DSLR has better image quality than P&S for 2 reasons : much larger sensor area and ability to use better lenses. Lens design is a compromise between convenience, price and image quality.

looks convincing to get the 450D instead of G9.

may i ask what lens need i get on top of the kit lens for 450D (18-55mm) to get a reasonable zoom ?
is it all right to use the 18-55mm as a standard lens fixed to the camera ?

Do also consider that a DSLR costs a lot more to start with, then starts sucking money from you like a black hole.

What's reasonable depends on what you're trying to shoot. The 18-55mm IS is a pretty good lens from what I read. The non IS version is not as good (even ignoring the image stabilizing part). I find that range pretty good for indoors (especially at the wider end).

The 55-250mm I mentioned is the companion lens to the 18-55mm IS. The only problem is that you may find yourself needing to switch lenses too often to be practical, if your needs happen to fall in between the two lenses. I'm not sure if a 450D kit is available with both the lenses - someone in Singapore would be in a better position to advice on that.
