I chanced upon this letter by Owen Unsworth, County Durham when browsing Issue 15 of the Digital Photographer... just wanted to share it...

Is it art?

Having followed the debate in the photography press over the relative merits of digital and film photography, it seems to me that many of us are missing the point: photography is a skill, an art even, and the equipment used is secondary to the ability of the user.

In this age of instant gratification, there are plenty of people who want to take great pictures but don't want to put the time and effort into learning the necessary skills. Many of them believe that digital cameras offer this shortcut and are disappointed to find that they still need to learn.

With digital cameras now approaching (and in some cases superseding) the picture quality of film cameras, it is a golden age for photogreaphers in the terms of the choice of equipment available. But we must remember that the ability to 'see' a good picture can never be replaced by technology.

What's the question then?
