Is it advisable to use a lens hood for long focal length shots?

just wondering.
Yes using a hood is pretty much essential with long lenses and becomes vital when shooting near the sun as many long lenses are more prone to flare than shorter lenses.

The "flower" shape is to reduce vignetting for wider angle shots if you're using a zoom lens. The gaps in the lens hood are supposed to be aligned with the corners of the image frame.

yes, midnight is right. I found the link anyway :

Imagine using a standard 2"-deep round hood on a wide-angle lens. You'd get vignetting in all four corners, right? So you'd cut away the four corners, little by little, until the vignetting stopped-- perhaps as close as 1/2" out from the front element. Result? A tulip- shaped hood that would keep a lot more sun off the front element than would a hood that was only 1/2" deep all around.

With long lenses and lenses that are prone to flare yes.
