A new memory card need to be format inorder to work with other device?

My wife brought a new 256MB memory stick due to her existing 128MB is full. She didn't format as her sister took a photo n don't want it to be deleted.

So, this morning, i helped her to transfer her 128MB photos to my HDD and all go smoothly. I was using the protable hard disk to transfer due to the support of memory stick. When I insert the 256MB, it didn't work at all. I put back the 256MB into the camera n the photo still there.

So, is it true that we need to format before use?

might be your portable hdd dun support that file format or disk format... you can try putting to a pc via a card reader, it should not be a problem...

You do not have to format a new CF. I never had to with all my new cards.

No, don't have to do so unless you want quick deletion of all files on that card, or if your card is corrupted
