Is Film SLR still alive today?

I was at Orchard Road today and happen to see a few people carrying SLR (not DSLR) camera.
2 people which I notice happen to carry F4 and F5 respectively with a very new Lowepro Bag, Manfrotto tripod.
I was wondering, in the digital age of 21st century, with more and more digital camera in the market, like 8080, 5700, A2, Pro 1, F828, 300D, 1D MK II, D100, D70 and more to be coming out soon, will SLR be phase out and become an antique in the national museum?

I still see people buying SLR.
Is SLR a precious diamond? Is there any fun or interest using SLR?
There is no image preview on SLR.
Why so good about SLR?

P.S. Hey guys, I am not insulting SLR professional, just ponder why still a lot of ppl using, just a forum discussion so as to solve my curiousity.

1. for work requirement
2. for love of it
3. coz they r the folks born n bred long b4 the GenX, GenY, GenZ etc digital era and are hardcore believers of film (just like im a hardcore canon fan and super biased against the darkside )
4. for "conventional" learning methods

Wanna find the answer yrself? cos everytime u ask, different ppl from different time will tell u different thing wat is the point. simple reasons.

a simple search for digital vs film will give you the answer.

to be brief. film still offer a wider latitude, more dynamic range than digital (currently)

to make use of wide lens @ full frame. unless you can afford a 1Ds.

Film and SLR's are still very much alive and Fuji seems to think so to. They have a new slide film on the way, I was just reading about it here

probably these reasons? dont flame me just some innocent :ipuke: opinions.

1) film quality is "gooder" than digital?

2) cheaper start up? Used Film SLR is quite affordable ? (FOr one , I cant afford DSLRs now, if that happens to you too, raise your right hand and say amen now.)

3) the fun of trying out different films, slides, and black and white film?

4) the shutter sound? I dunno it sounds great on the old manual cameras and the film advance crank sound?

5) maybe...maybe the classic feeling of walking way after carefully focusing and adhering to film discipline before shooting, and thinking that one has successfully captured the priceless ala "mastercard moment" in a picture.

but of course, hopefully it was captured, since there was no preview whatsoever , the only way to see it was to have it processed. And maybe thats why some people swear outside photolabs... :dunno:

it's not just the "old folks", though.
I'm 20 and i just bought myself a minolta 505si.
I just love the feel of the whole process,
the feelings of anxiety when you send your negatives for print,
the fervent hoping that at least one or two pictures will come out good,
and the joy, the wonder of recieving the prints and poring over them with your friends or family.

sure, a digital workflow speeds things up a lot, and you have the flexibility of photo-editing without having to scan. but ultimately, film still offers the best quality at a reasonable price (and the prices are almost always dropping! all the better for poor people like me!)

They use SLR because they don't like using DSLR...vice versa.

Before there was digital, there was film. And it was good quality. Very good quality. Even today, most DSLR's cannot match the quality of pro film at low ISO's, and the crop factor is a turnoff for me.

Of course, we know digital is taking over while film is declining. Nevertheless, there are millions of marvellous film SLRs still in perfect working condition, they offer great price/performance for the occasional shooter. No need to buy CF cards, do photoshop, photo printers, etc.

Even working pros can use F4's and F5's as long as their work are not too time-sensitive. The quality is excellent, and for more than 50 years pros have used film cameras without previews to capture the most marvellous images.

Film will serve the older generation very well, for as long as they own and use their film cameras. After that, who knows?

I believe film will retain a niche in specialised applications such as adventure photography (where you might be in a jungle or mountains for weeks on end with no access to electricity), travel photojournalism (easier to carry film than a DSLR + laptop and charger), etc.
