Im using coolpix990. After taking one shot, the camera takes a while to save the images and im unable to shoot the next shot immediately. Is this typical of a digital camera? Thks.

Does newer cameras in the market are peforming better in this area -( i mean shorter time interval between each shots) ?

It depends on the resolution the images are taken, the type of image used eg. raw, tiff, jpeg.

Some cameras do perform faster.

Jpeg tends to be faster, while RAW is rather slow...even the transfer of pix from camera to PC is similar in speed. Guess it's cause of the size of the images when saved in different formats and resolutions.
Larger files, better resolution=slower transfer from camera into memory card!! :(

It is a common problem for most consumer class digicams. You can consider upgrading to Canon D60, Canon 1D, Nikon D100, or Nikon D1X if shutter lag is your main cause of headaches. ;)

The Olympus C-2100UZ minimize this kinda problem by storing the image data in a 16MB buffer b4 writting into the storage media.....so you can take a few shots continuously b4 stopping.

If shooting in low-res, paractically u can shoot none-stop.
