Images lost in SD Cards

I had about 1000 plus images in my SD card of my D600. Most of which had been transferred to the NX2 (which was installed on my Mac laptop). Last night I've taken about 300 photos, this morning I view the photos from via the card reader on my office Window laptop (without the NX2). I copied some onto the laptop.

After which when I tried to open up from my Mac laptop back home, it said unable to read. I then inserted back the SD Card back to my camera, and tried to view. To my shock, all images gone and was asked to reformate the card.

Has all the images gone from the card? anyway to retrieve all of them?
